Raritan Introduces Power IQ Solution to Provide Valuable Insights on Power Usage and Capacity in Dynamic Data Centers

- Software solution helps customers improve data center uptime, capacity planning and energy efficiency -

SOMERSET, N.J., Sept. 9 /- Expanding its intelligent power management solution portfolio, Raritan today introduced Power IQ(TM) to help customers turn high volumes of power-related data collected from individual servers into valuable insight on power usage in the data center. It provides rich information on power utilization and the environment surrounding servers to help IT and facilities managers improve data center uptime, enhance capacity planning and improve energy efficiency.

Power IQ gathers and analyzes device-level power information, in real time, from servers plugged into intelligent power distribution units (PDUs). The information helps IT managers make key data center health and optimization decisions. It can help identify underutilized servers as candidates to virtualize, problem hot spots or over-cooled areas, circuit breakers at the point of tripping, and racks with available power capacity to add more IT equipment.

"Tracking and displaying power at the IT device level are laying the groundwork for making high-value improvements in capacity management and energy efficiency," said James Cerwinski, senior product manager, Raritan's Power Management Business Unit. "Using individual device statistics to manage data centers is a similar approach to managing a baseball team. The team batting average may tell you that you need better hitting, but you make your changes at the player level. In a dynamic data center, you need stats to decide what device changes are required and, most importantly, what changes are producing the desired results in terms of energy efficiency and capacity planning. Power IQ takes guessing out of the equation."

Through a single Web interface, Power IQ aggregates power-utilization data collected from multiple intelligent rack PDUs -- including Raritan's Dominion(R) PX and third-party-vendor PDUs, such as APC -- for use in power usage trend analysis and reporting. Today's new class of network-connected PDUs provide granular "IT device-level" or outlet-level metering, and provide power intelligence on each piece of equipment -- such as real-time current and voltage -- and rack temperature and humidity. They also enable companies to securely power on and off and power cycle connected devices from remote locations.

Customers can use Power IQ to generate reports on baseline energy usage, and track improvements on energy saving initiatives and circuit capacity utilization. Power IQ provides accurate IT device, outlet group-, rack-, branch circuit- and data center-level power, current voltage, temperature and humidity monitoring, as well as remote outlet switching. The open database compliant (ODBC)-system can be integrated with data warehouse and enterprise reporting systems.

Power IQ also provides centralized management of distributed Raritan Dominion PX PDUs -- enabling firmware updates, configuration management and health monitoring to be accomplished remotely through a single Web interface. Security is ensured through standards-based authentication, Web session timeout and IP-based access control.

Law Firm Reducing Carbon Footprint with Power IQ

Duane Morris LLP, one of the largest law firms with offices in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, uses Raritan's power solutions to manage IT equipment in its more than 24 offices. The law firm's centralized IT staff uses Power IQ and Dominion PX to monitor the amount of amperage and watts drawn by each piece of equipment and to power down equipment during off-peak hours.

"Raritan's solutions let us know what kind of power is being consumed in an equipment room, and it helps identify areas where we can conserve," said the law firm's Technical Services Director Mike Carpinella. "Power IQ is a great tool to centralize and manage all the PX devices. I can go to one single console using one IP address, whether I'm in the office or coming in remotely, and look at the statistics for each of my devices in all locations. In addition, I can easily do mass firmware upgrades for all my PX devices."

Availability

Power IQ is available worldwide through Raritan's channel partners. A 45-day free trial and more information on Power IQ can be found at http://www.raritan.com/products/power-management/power-iq.

Power IQ is available in two models -- a virtual appliance and a hardware appliance. The virtual appliance is tested specifically to run on a customer's VMware platform -- saving rack space, energy and hardware cost. The hardware appliance is a turnkey solution on an enterprise-class server.
