New QNX Middleware Solution Optimizes Performance of Handsfree Car Systems

DETROIT, Nov. 6 / / - At the QNX Automotive Summit today, attendees will receive a demonstration of the QNX(R) Aviage(R) acoustic processing kit, the new QNX middleware solution for improving the quality and reducing the cost of handsfree and voice-activated in-car systems.

The QNX Aviage acoustic processing kit reduces driver distraction by improving voice intelligibility on both sides of a handsfree conversation. Besides filtering out wind, fan, and road noise, it eliminates the echo and screeching feedback that can occur when the microphone picks up the sound from the car speakers. The QNX Aviage kit also offers a unique feature that "fills in" the limited bandwidth of cellphone calls, providing richer sound quality and making it easier for the driver to understand the remote party. Tinny-sounding phone calls are eliminated.

Traditionally, handsfree and voice-activated automotive systems have required a dedicated processor to separate voice signals from noise created by traffic, air vents, and other sources. The QNX Aviage acoustic processing kit eliminates the need for such hardware, reducing system costs by ten to fifteen dollars per unit.

Highly customizable, the kit offers a modular library of software algorithms that system designers can use individually or in combination, based on application requirements. Modules include acoustic echo cancellation, noise suppression, automatic gain control, bandwidth extension, and many others.

This modular structure, along with support for multiple processors and DSPs, allows system designers to easily update, modify, and reuse the kit across multiple product lines. As a result, customers can maximize investments in development and further reduce production costs.

The QNX Aviage acoustic processing kit also eliminates the lengthy tuning process typically associated with solutions for noise suppression and echo cancellation. In the past, migrating a solution from one vehicle to another would involve weeks of tweaking and re-tuning. With the new QNX Aviage kit, the tuning process typically takes a day or less.

The QNX Aviage acoustic processing kit offers a field-proven solution. Its patented, modular algorithms have already been integrated in more than 55 vehicle models from Acura, Audi, BMW, Daimler, Fiat, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Porsche, and other vehicle manufacturers.

"Hands-free and speech-enabled in-car systems help to reduce driver distraction, but the goal now is to make these systems available for all classes of vehicles. By eliminating costly hardware and nearly eliminating the costly tuning process, the QNX Aviage acoustic processing library makes such systems affordable for a much larger range of automobiles, including economy models," said Andrew Poliak, automotive business manager at QNX Software Systems.

Availability and hardware support

The QNX Aviage acoustic processing kit runs on a variety of 32-bit CPUs and DSPs, including ARM9+, SH-4+, PowerPC processors, and TI C64x DSPs.
