OPEN Engineering to Extend Its Multi-Physics CAE Environment OOFELIE to Piezoelectricity and Vibroacoustics Analyses

Liege, Belgium - September, 2005 - OPEN Engineering, editor of the advanced CAE multi-physics platform OOFELIE, announces the release of two new branches of its multi-physics software, OOFELIE PiezoElectric and OOFELIE VibroAcoustics, respectively dedicated to the virtual prototyping of piezoelectricity and vibroacoustics phenomena. Both new software products are driven by the general CAD based FEA pre- and postprocessor SAMCEF Field developed by SAMTECH.

OOFELIE PiezoElectric, driven by SAMCEF Field is a Virtual Prototyping multi-physics software product for the analysis and design of piezoelectric systems. It provides engineers and analysts with unique capabilities to analyze systems involving piezoelectric materials such as sensors, actuators, ultrasonic motors, accelerometers... Thanks to the modelling capabilities of this new product, it becomes possible to start simulating the performance of systems coupling mechanical and electrical phenomena even before a single physical prototype is built. Design changes can be evaluated faster and in a more affordable manner, reducing the number of actual prototypes needed to achieve a required design maturity, thus accelerating significantly product development.

OOFELIE VibroAcoustics, driven by SAMCEF Field is another Virtual Prototyping multi-physics software for the analysis and design of acoustic and vibroacoustic problems. It provides a methodology that allows predicting the acoustic and vibroacoustic behaviour of interior, exterior and mixed interior-exterior fluid regions and their interaction with structures. The Finite Element method (FEM) and the Boundary Element Method (BEM), as well as a coupling between the two methods, are available to maximise the efficiency of the numerical methodology to tackle many different situations.

OOFELIE PiezoElectric and OOFELIE VibroAcoustics software products have significant advantages for their respective fields of application: strong coupling between physical disciplines, electrodes and circuit elements, availability of multiple types of analyses (static, modal, harmonic and transient analyses), FEM-BEM coupling for mixed interior-exterior vibro-acoustic problems... Thanks to object-oriented methods and state-of-the-art programming techniques, customised developments and incorporation of new algorithms can be easily implemented.

Both these new solvers are driven by SAMCEF Field, the modern user-friendly and context-sensitive CAD based environment developed by SAMTECH, which already provides advanced tools to model, simulate and analyse linear and non-linear thermo-mechanical systems using well-known industrial FEA solvers like SAMCEF or NASTRAN. SAMCEF Field has been tailored to efficiently approach the fields of piezoelectricity and vibroacoustics. Its visual and hierarchically arranged layout guides the users through all the steps of model preparation, resolution procedure and analysis. CAD creation and import capabilities using various geometrical formats (STEP, IGES, CATIA V4, CATIA V5, BREP...), parameterized data input and state-of-the-art results post-processing are easily accessible from a user-friendly and coherent environment, assisting greatly in the organization of multiple simulations.

"Until now, OPEN Engineering's main activities were focused on specific customized developments and services in multidisciplinary analysis based on the OOFELIE platform." said Igor Klapka, Managing Director of OPEN Engineering. "The integration of OOFELIE PiezoElectric and OOFELIE VibroAcoustics in SAMCEF Field, as commercial of the shelf software products, illustrates that our developments and our company structure as well, have reached a new maturity level. Further software developments are already planned such as the integration of MEMS and the Opto-Thermo-Mechanical analyses in SAMCEF Field. As member of the SAMTECH Group, we directly benefit from SAMTECH skills in software industrialisation to provide new multi-physics solutions in SAMCEF Field."

About OPEN Engineering

OPEN Engineering s.a. is the latest branch of SAMTECH Group (www.samcef.com). The company is in charge of the development of transversal Multi-Physics software solutions. Created in December 2001, OPEN Engineering was the first spin-off created together by SAMTECH and the University of Liege in the frame of WALLONIA SPACE LOGISTICS (WSL). It commercializes a new multi-physics analysis tool called OOFELIE, which will assure the continuation of this long tradition of advanced numerical simulation.

OPEN Engineering develops customized multi-physics virtual prototyping solutions based on OOFELIE in order to solve specific coupled applications like MEMS, systems with piezoelectric materials, vibro-acoustics analysis, electromagnetism, opto-thermo-mechanical problems, fluid-structure interactions.... OPEN Engineering allows the SAMTECH Group to complete its commercial offer, to be present on the emerging multi-physics design markets and to provide services for the development of original highly coupled analysis solutions covering specific needs and involving several, possibly strongly coupled, disciplines.

OPEN Engineering offers both software products and engineering services for multidisciplinary engineering design and analysis, as well as specific object oriented project development services, for example to provide enhanced applicability and extend the lifetime of specific and proprietary software in industry
