Airwide Solutions Brings Unprecedented Protection to SMS Messages

New AirGuard AntiSpam addresses growing problem of spam, fraud, flooding, viruses, spoofing and "smishing" (SMS phishing)

BURLINGTON, Mass. and READING, U.K., Oct. 18 // -- Airwide Solutions, the leading provider of mobile messaging infrastructure and applications, today unveiled an antidote for the new and growing epidemic of mobile messaging threats.

Airwide's new AirGuard AntiSpam brings comprehensive anti-threat capabilities to SMS messaging networks, which have lacked this type of protection. The solution lets operators protect their network and subscribers from all threats of fraud, spam and other malware infecting SMS messages in one comprehensive solution.

AirGuard AntiSpam can increase SMS revenues, reduce operator and subscriber costs and protect the operator's brand. According to recent studies(i), more than eight in 10 mobile phone users have received unsolicited SMS messages and are more likely to change their operator than their mobile number to fight the problem. AirGuard AntiSpam also protects subscribers who are increasingly falling victims to scams and malicious content. The service defends against a wide variety of abuses, including denial-of-service attacks, unwanted advertisements, offensive content, scams, and over-the-air (OTA) messages that reprogram handsets to use premium rate numbers.

"AirGuard AntiSpam gives operators three important benefits: revenue protection, brand protection and cost reduction," said Patrick Lopez, Airwide's vice president of product management. "In fact, proactive operators who are early to market with this service can potentially add millions to the bottom line and even take a lead in the race for market share."

How it works
AirGuard AntiSpam analyzes and monitors all messaging traffic in the network regardless of its point of origin. It protects against attacks originating from inside or outside the operator's own home network. Protection is provided for the most common forms of attack through:

o Source validation, which protects against spoof and fake fraud.
o Anti-flooding to protect the network from floods of messages, and
o Message filtering, which detects and removes spam, scam and OTA messages and can help prevent the download of viruses to smart phones.

Unlike competitive systems that just employ spam filtering, AirGuard AntiSpam combines spam filtering with anti-fraud techniques so the ability to spam for free is removed, and the ability to reach victims is reduced. Additionally, AirGuard AntiSpam is the first solution to bring virus protection to SMS networks. The application also provides protection against fake and spoof fraud as defined in the GSM Association's IR.70 SMS SS7 Fraud specification.

AirGuard AntiSpam also closes down bypass techniques that enable content providers to deliver premium-priced messages directly to the subscriber, denying the mobile operator the opportunity to collect revenue from messages sent to their subscribers. The application gives both operators and subscribers control and flexibility in setting up spam protection. Operators can lock specific addresses and sources, create blacklists and whitelists, and apply many other messaging controls with a high degree of granularity. AirGuard AntiSpam also works with Airwide's recently launched AirMessenger Personal applications which enable subscribers to personalize additional filters to control SMS messages.

AirGuard AntiSpam is available immediately.
