OnBase Version 6.4 Broadens OnBase's Ability to Connect Healthcare Organizations with Content-Centric Enterprise Processes

CLEVELAND, May 30 -- Hyland Software Inc. today announced the release of version 6.4 of its OnBase enterprise content management (ECM) software suite. OnBase 6.4 is highlighted by new functionality to help enterprise IT departments make it easier for people to interact with content- driven business processes through their preferred Web-based and desktop productivity tools.

"Process improvement starts with people; but too often, information workers fail to fully embrace ECM solutions because the technology is unfamiliar to them," explained Ed McQuiston, Director of Healthcare Solutions at Hyland Software. "OnBase 6.4 expands the choices we provide to information workers and other stakeholders in order to help them access content-driven processes through their preferred user experience."

The latest version of OnBase provides enhancements to existing functionality including:

-- The OnBase Medical Record Release of Information module secures patient information and protects patient privacy. Information from multiple patient information systems are stored in OnBase and complete a comprehensive electronic health record. With strict security, access to this information is defined by the requestor and includes an auditing process to ensure that information is released in accordance with State and Federal laws. Accuracy is improved and productivity increased as manual processes are replaced by automated workflows. This increased efficiency results not only in labor savings for the organization but enhances customer service by improving the timeliness and accountability of responding to patient health information requests.

-- Expanded support for the HL7 (Health Level 7) for healthcare providers through new features such as Barcode Face Sheet Generation for HL7. Many hospitals do not have the ability to generate bar code labels during the patient registration process. As a result, the individual medical record documents do not include the barcodes needed to automate the capture of specific patient information as they are being digitally scanned into an ECM repository. Barcode Face Sheet Generation for HL7 captures this information from an HL7 message and uses it to create a unique barcode cover sheet for each patient chart. Utilizing this solution allows hospitals to more accurately capture and retrieve patient documentation to support electronic medical records.

-- The EDI module has been expanded to address important changes to the way health claims are submitted and processed. A new provider identifier number will replace all other health plan provider identifiers, and a new claim form that includes a place to report the new provider identifier will replace the current HCFA 1500 form.

-- Encrypted CD/DVD Publishing, which adds an additional layer of security to protect OnBase documents and databases published to CD/DVD media. Encryption prevents sensitive information from being viewed by unauthorized users without a correct password. This provides a secure way for organizations, such as healthcare providers, to transfer sensitive personal information via portable media.

"The Release of Information module allows us to streamline our process and increase efficiency. Prior to the OnBase implementation, patient information was stored in multiple systems, making it difficult and time consuming to compile. Now all of the information is in one location, OnBase. Quite simply, OnBase is the glue that brings together all the disparate applications of a healthcare organization. The solution simplifies the flow of patient information and provides our staff with seamless access to all the documentation they need, when they need it," Dr. Simeon A. Schwartz, President of Westchester Medical Group said. "The solution has enabled us to enhance quality and meet HIPAA regulations. Additionally, the amount of labor involved is a fraction compared to past practices and we expect to see a rapid return on investment."

"All too often, content-enabled process and collaboration efforts are regarded as being separate from the central things that happen every day across an organization," stated Toby Bell, Gartner, from "Key Issues for Content-Enabled Vertical Applications" published May 2, 2007.

"Many [ECM] initiatives founder, or at least fail to meet expectations, because they are insufficiently built into becoming "the way we do things here." But by leveraging best practices expressed as [vertical] solutions on a more consistent content architecture and underlying formats, enterprises can retire a substantial amount of custom code created to support non-competitive processes. By making best practices more portable and repeatable, the market for [vertical] solutions will far exceed that for [ECM] suite software alone."
