SimSci-Esscor Introduces New Performance-Monitoring Solution for Power Plants

PowRx Software Combines Sensor Reconciliation and Complete System Simulation

LAKE FOREST, Calif., May 5, 2003 -- SimSci-Esscor, an operating unit of Invensys plc, today announced the introduction of PowRx(TM), a new Web-enabled performance-monitoring solution for power plants.

One of the industry's only power plant performance-management solutions to use rigorous optimization technology, the PowRx solution can lower a plant's operating costs and save valuable time by monitoring asset performance around the clock. It also delivers reliable information about a plant's operations, performance and maintenance to authorized personnel across the enterprise.

PowRx is a central pillar of SimSci-Esscor's family of proven industrial solutions designed to help users overcome the challenges of running a competitive power-generation facility and obtain peak performance from their operating units. It joins the company's successful roster of power industry applications such as the Connoisseur advanced process control solution, the FSIM Plus control system simulator for Foxboro I/A series systems and other operating training simulators.

"Customers in the power-generation industry require software solutions that help maintain peak plant performance, satisfy delivery contracts and avoid unscheduled shutdowns," said Ken Brown, vice president and general manager of SimSci-Esscor. "PowRx is one of the only commercial solutions that can persistently monitor and optimize the entire plant cycle in real time. It uniquely applies system wide advanced cycle and equipment simulation and sensor reconciliation technologies to real-time operating data. As a result, operators can provide improved asset dispatch and overall economic performance."

PowRx applications in power plants include steady-state simulation for "what-if" analysis, operating data reconciliation, cycle performance monitoring and equipment performance monitoring for gas, coal, combined cycle and nuclear-generating plants. As an on-line diagnostic tool, the solution eliminates the need for back-end data management enabling users to make well-informed business decisions. With the PowRx solution, operators can quickly identify under-performing equipment, plan effective maintenance operations and engineer operational improvements.

The PowRx solution combines a friendly and open graphical user environment with a client/server architecture that eases model building, usage and results review. It also supports the ODBC and @aGlance protocols while offering interfaces to popular plant data historian applications such as AIM*, PHD and PI.

"PowRx is a culmination of SimSci-Esscor's years of industry experience, domain expertise and world-class technology," Brown said. "Its introduction underscores the company's commitment to delivering innovative simulation and optimization products and services that can make a significant improvement in response to changing plant and market conditions while leveraging our customers' existing technology investments."
