DataLabs Announces Industry's First Middleware Product Built Specifically for the Biopharmaceutical Industry

New integration platform leverages a library of predefined connectors and allows clients to write their own custom connectors, easing the pain of creating and managing system integrations.

IRVINE, Calif., June 14 / -- DataLabs, an innovative developer of Internet-based software applications for clinical development, today announced the release of DataLabs Connect(TM) v2.0. DataLabs Connect is an enterprise-level middleware product built specifically for the biopharmaceutical industry. A first for the industry, DataLabs Connect includes an application server, management portal, connector framework and predefined connectors that integrate the entire suite of DataLabs' products including Galt Associates dsNavigator encoding and dictionary management product and other best-of-breed products.

"This product segment has been heavily ignored by large service-oriented EDC vendors. Many of these vendors depend on behind the scenes smoke and mirrors to achieve a desired integration, while others promote the use of CDISC and Web services standards but lack a common framework to manage the integrations," said Nick Richards, COO of DataLabs. "The DataLabs Connect product is the culmination of DataLabs' years of experience in implementing and integrating our suite of solutions within our customers' environments."

Many integration projects are built as single point-to-point integrations that do not leverage a common messaging or error handling framework. The complexity of managing multiple point-to-point integrations increases exponentially as each new integration component is added. DataLabs Connect provides a common framework to support integrations with solutions based on open standards such as CDISC and Web services, but provides a toolkit to integrate with proprietary systems such as lab equipment and other legacy type solutions.

"One of the biggest engineering challenges in this market is to facilitate the sharing of information without having to modify the applications on the connected systems," said Solomon Shacter, Director, Software Engineering for DataLabs. "DataLabs Connect extends beyond the capabilities of many general purpose middleware products with the concept of a Master Resource Catalog (MRC) that serves as a central hub, brokering the communication of disparate systems."

Since a single source vendor strategy does not serve most customer needs, each client can integrate its own best-of-breed suite of products, utilizing DataLabs Connect by either writing custom connectors or by leveraging the existing library of connectors. DataLabs expects to launch a program later this summer that extends the SDK (software development toolkit) to third-party technology vendors.

"We are extremely pleased with the response we have received from other technology vendors," said Richards. "We already have more than ten vendors signed up to begin co-developing connectors based on the DataLabs Connect v2.0 platform. This should help relieve the burden on already overworked IT departments for common integration types."

Pricing and Availability

DataLabs Connect 2.0 is available now directly from DataLabs and is sold under various licensing models depending on the specific needs of the customer. DataLabs Connect and associated connectors to support the DataLabs suite of products are included at no cost with the purchase of any one product in the DataLabs suite. The full version of DataLabs Connect v2.0 that provides the ability to write custom connectors is sold on a per server basis and additional third-party connectors are sold as additional add-ons ranging from $500 to $15,000.
