NI LabVIEW Integrates with TI Code Composer Studio to Shorten DSP Design Cycle

NEWS RELEASE -- Dec. 4, 2002 -- National Instruments today announced the availability of the LabVIEW DSP Test Integration Toolkit. With this software, engineers can integrate NI LabVIEW graphical development environment with Texas Instruments Code Composer Studio development tools, greatly reducing testing and development time of TI's digital signal processing (DSP) systems.

Because testing early in the design process of DSP systems was traditionally complex and time consuming, design engineers often delayed validation until after system prototypes were built. With this toolset, engineers use LabVIEW to easily integrate measurements throughout the design process. This helps them identify design flaws prior to prototype construction, greatly reducing time to market and improving quality of products that use DSP chips, including wireless LAN systems, MP3 players, household appliances, and others.

"The integration of LabVIEW with Code Composer Studio enhances and extends traditional DSP code development and increases engineers' efficiency in testing TI DSP-based systems earlier in the development cycle," said Omar Fattah, eXpressDSP plug-ins manager at TI. "This ability to control a TI DSP from LabVIEW ultimately enables TI customers to release more robust products faster."

The LabVIEW DSP Test Integration Toolkit gives engineers an intuitive and familiar graphical tool to easily build DSP test and verification systems. As an eXpressDSP-compliant plug-in, this toolkit automates routine functions in Code Composer Studio, such as "build" and "run," and communicates test data directly to and from the DSP chip's memory. Using LabVIEW, engineers can read and write data internal to the DSP chips and can view and control test data in real time at speeds of up to 2 MB/s using TI RTDX data link.

Because LabVIEW integrates seamlessly with a wide variety of measurement I/O, engineers can generate real-world stimuli and take real-world measurements to compare with theoretical data. They then can correlate operating parameters of DSP algorithms with the actual effects seen on the input and output to the DSP and adjust system parameters dynamically, thus speeding testing and verification phases of code development.

The LabVIEW DSP Test Integration Toolkit works with the TMS320C6000, TMS320C5000, TMS320C2800, and OMAP platforms. Users must use LabVIEW 6.1 and Code Composer Studio 2.1 or higher with the toolkit.

National Instruments is part of TI's third-party network, the most extensive collection of DSP development support in the industry. As part of this program, the NI LabVIEW DSP Test Integration Toolkit has been tested to ensure compliance with TI's software standards.
