Infravio Advances Web Services Management with Web Services Delivery Contracts(TM)

Customers, Providence Health Systems and British American Tobacco Validate Infravio's Design-to-Runtime Approach

CUPERTINO, Calif. - November 17, 2003 - Championing contract-driven Web Services Management, Infravio, Inc. today announced Infravio Ensemble(TM) 4.0, the new release of its enterprise-grade, openly architected, Web Services Management Suite.

"Infravio Ensemble is loaded with new Web Services Management features that enable IT to secure, manage and control their Web Services at every step of the lifecycle," said Mukund Balasubramanian, co-founder and CTO for Infravio. "We built the product around an open and extensible architecture, so that customers can access our open pluggable interfaces to utilize providers-of-choice for security, orchestration, transports, and other critical components of the enterprise infrastructure. We took the same approach for run-time management by allowing customers to either use our console and dashboard features, or push that same information to the systems management provider of their choice."

Highlights of Infravio Ensemble advances are:

Web Services Delivery Contracts(TM), the innovative, core feature that governs the relationships between the providing and consuming applications; controls and manages Web Services across the lifecycle; facilitates Services reuse; and increases business agility as organizations move toward a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). The Web Services Delivery Contracts feature is patent-pending by Infravio.

Expanded Run-time Management functionality to secure Web Services and manage their availability and performance, including a Run-time Console that provides logging, monitoring, alert notifications and configurable graphics, and powerful Rules-based Routing for managing fail-over, load balancing, versioning, and Service Level Agreements (SLAs), based on content, context, or contract terms.

Powerful Application Program Interfaces (APIs), to facilitate the easy integration of 3rd party software to extend functionality for delivery services, systems management, and business monitoring. Handler Plug-in APIs integrate 3rd party products for critical delivery service functionality and Event Manager APIs leverage existing systems management solutions from companies, such as BMC, NetIQ, and HP.

Web Services Delivery Contracts - Gaining Control of Web Services

As more companies use Web Services as part of their overall IT strategy, control is a central issue. Companies want to identify and authorize both the Web Service providers and Web Service consumers. They want to control, manage, and monitor the interactions between the provider and the consumer at every step of the lifecycle, as they build their SOA to improve productivity and reduce costs. (For an overview of Infravio's vision and strategy, see separate release, Infravio Champions Contract-Driven Web Services Management and Control, November 17, 2003.)

"You need to think about the future of Web Services from the very beginning," explained Infravio customer Mike Reagin, director of research and development for Providence Health System. "The trick is tracking all the Services you have as you build them. Selecting the right Web Services Management tool early, and thinking about both the design and the deployment stage, is critical to your success."

Infravio Ensemble's Web Services Delivery Contracts contain configurable terms, defining both the delivery preferences (i.e., security, messaging, and transformation) and the operational requirements (i.e., SLA, alerts, and notifications) between Web Service consumers and providers. After registering and authorizing Web Services providers and consumers, a contract is established using the Infravio Configurator. At run-time, the Infravio Distributed Broker enforces the contract terms. Operations management is then done by the Infravio Console, or in conjunction with 3rd party systems management products integrated using the Infravio Event Manager API.

Expanded Run-time Management for Reliable Services

Infravio Ensemble 4.0 provides centralized run-time management capabilities for both active and passive management. The Web Services Administrator can monitor and troubleshoot Web Services. Management reporting and actions are based on the terms specified in the Web Services Delivery Contract. Information is presented to the Console in graphs, meters, and other dashboard-like features.

The new Infravio Ensemble offering includes:

The Infravio Console that presents the alert, notification, logging and monitoring information for centralized run-time management.

Powerful Rules-based Routing manages fail-over, load balancing, versioning, SLAs or preferential Quality of Service (QoS). Routing is based on content, context, or contract terms.

Powerful APIs to Extend Functionality

"The open architecture of Infravio Ensemble made it easy to plug in other vendor products, like Librados and CXO Systems, which were essential to building and delivering our supply chain dashboard as an early win in our Web Services initiative," said Kevin Poulter, application technology manager for British American Tobacco.

Ensemble's open extensible architecture allows the integration of third party solutions for plug-in delivery services (i.e., security, messaging, and data transformation), for operations management (i.e., alerts, notifications, logging, and SLAs) and for business monitoring (i.e., BAM).

This is made possible by two new sets of APIs:

Handler Plug-in APIs facilitate the integration of 3rd party software for plug-in services, such as security, orchestration, transaction management, messaging, or transformations. Companies can choose to use products already in-house or best of breed products for key Web Services delivery functions.

Event Manager APIs support Infravio's view that many IT organizations are likely to prefer a unified systems management approach, one that integrates Web Services operations management with existing management systems. To satisfy this preference, Infravio delivers a powerful JMX-based Event Manager API that allows integration with 3rd party systems management products.

Infravio Ensemble 4.0 is currently in controlled release. The product will be generally available later this quarter. For more information, including pricing, please call (408) 861-3038 or email sales@infravio.com.
