It All Adds Up: Owens Corning Designs Tool to Aid Builders With Energy Policy Act and Improve the Energy Efficiency of Their Projects

Proprietary Energy Solutions Calculator Software Offers Builders a Competitive Edge

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 11 -- Leading building materials manufacturer Owens Corning introduced the Owens Corning Builder Energy Solutions Calculator at the International Builders Show today. The new software not only provides the ability to better understand how to most economically improve the energy efficiency of their projects, but also provides a sophisticated analytic tool to help builders meet tax credit compliance standards for the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

"The Energy Policy Act represents a significant opportunity for our industry to both grow and to build more thermally efficient structures," says John Pagano, vice president of builder strategy, Owens Corning. "Without question, however, this kind of legislation requires understanding and following a process that's often technically and administratively difficult -- and this calculator is designed with one simple goal -- to make the process easier for our builder business partners."

How it works
In order to provide builders with information, the Owens Corning Builder Energy Solutions Calculator uses sophisticated DOE-2 modeling software (one of the industry's most sophisticated building energy analysis program that can predict the energy use and cost for all types of buildings), and uses default product cost estimates from a variety of builders as baseline information. The program is designed to:
-- Provide integrated information on the relevant features and benefits of the Energy Policy Act
-- Project what builders must do to meet the criteria to get to the tax credit level
-- Demonstrate a builder's current building practices
-- Project the potential energy savings available to the home buyer
-- Help the builder differentiate their product offerings by delivering more energy efficient homes to consumers.

"As a 67-year-old corporation with a heritage built on energy efficiency, our purpose is very simple -- delivering solutions, transforming markets, and enhancing lives," said Pagano. "This tool further illustrates how Owens Corning is not only providing world-class products, but also world-class solutions to help our builder business partners grow and prosper in the marketplace and continue to push the creation of greener, more energy efficient sustainable homes."
