iAnywhere Enables the Age of the Intelligent RFID Device

SYNOPSIS: RFID Anywhere Appliance Edition brings intelligence and manageability to RFID devices, enhancing performance and reducing operating costs for enterprises deploying RFID solutions.

LONDON, Global RFID ROI Summit, Jan. 30-- iAnywhere, a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc. (NYSE:SY), today announced the release of RFID Anywhere(TM) Appliance Edition. The new product provides RFID hardware manufacturers with embeddable software components to build "smart" readers that include essential security features, support for a variety of communication protocols, the ability to execute logic on-device, remote management and upgrade capabilities, and RFID reader multi-protocol support.

With the RFID Anywhere Appliance Edition, engineers can build RFID readers that are both intelligent and easily managed, thereby significantly reducing the cost of ownership. Through remote management, reader configurations can be quickly and automatically restored, drastically reducing downtime and administrative overhead. On-device logic can filter and smooth data generated by the reader, ensuring that only essential information is transmitted and thus greatly reducing network data volumes.

"As RFID implementations move to production mode and begin to expand, there will be increasing demand for more intelligence and scalability at the reader level," said Martyn Mallick, director of product management, iAnywhere. "RFID Anywhere Appliance Edition meets this need by enabling hardware manufacturers to cost effectively embed advanced functionality and management within RFID devices, thereby increasing their competitiveness in the market."

RFID Anywhere Appliance Edition provides hardware manufacturers with components to easily engineer intelligence into their readers by taking advantage of the following key features:

o Secure access to the management functions of the device in accordance with existing network authentication policies (i.e., LDAP, Active Directory),
o Support for multiple standard communication protocols, including TCP/IP, HTTP(S), GPIO, and EPC Reader protocol 1.1, to facilitate easy application integration and support existing customers,
o Ability to set the reader to work autonomously for time and frequency read coordination, and control by GPIO events,
o API for developing business logic to be executed in the reader, including GPIO and multi-protocol reporting,
o Remote configuration and maintenance of RFID readers, including:
-- Web-based configuration via HTTP
-- Auto-restore of reader configuration (e.g., post power loss)
-- Reader firmware upgrade via the network interface
-- SNMP MIB for network appliance and for EPC 1.1 Management 1.0
-- Auto-discovery capability for registration of new readers on the network, and
o Seamless integration with iAnywhere's RFID Anywhere 2.0 for management of an entire RFID network, even across multiple sites. RFID Anywhere 2.0 provides administrators the ability to manage multiple RFID devices, including data filtering and aggregation, as well as the execution of business logic. Additionally, RFID Anywhere Appliance Edition easily integrates with other RFID middleware applications.

In a separate release issued today, iAnywhere and Applied Wireless Identification (AWID) announced that RFID Anywhere Appliance Edition will be embedded into AWID's MPR 3014 CE intelligent readers.
