Software enables 3D rotational and translational movement.

Press Release Summary:

Maxwell® v10, 3D/2D electromagnetic-simulation software, combines edge-based vector elements and nodal-based scalar elements, while numerical techniques accelerate computation and avoid non-physical solutions. It enables users to freeze permeability, determine demagnetization operating point of permanent magnets, and calculate core-loss coefficient from loss curve. It also offers geometry translation and meshing for IGES- and STEP-originating geometry.

Ansoft Releases Maxwell v10: New Research Enables 3D Rotational and Translational Movement

PITTSBURGH - November 17, 2003 - Ansoft Corporation (NASDAQ: ANST) announces the release of Maxwell® v10, significantly advancing the state of the art in 3D/2D electromagnetic simulation software for the analysis of electromagnetic and electromechanical devices.

Backed by groundbreaking research involving nonconforming mesh coupling techniques and the combined use of edge-based vector elements and nodal-based scalar elements, Maxwell 3D can now simulate linear translational motion and spinning rotational motion. This enables Maxwell 3D to accurately predict the performance of industrial applications, such as motors and actuators, where motion-induced physics is crucial to device behavior. The new numerical techniques speed computation and avoid non-physical solutions, a problem that has prevented 3D motion capability from reaching the mass market sooner.

"We're excited to bring this innovative technology to the market with the release of Maxwell v10," said Dr. Zoltan Cendes, Ansoft's Chairman and Chief Technology Officer. "For years, designers of electromechanical components have requested an easy-to-use capability to solve for the effects of 3D motion coupled to electromagnetics. Ansoft is the first to offer a fast, reliable and usable solution for both translational and rotational movement, giving our Maxwell customers a significant competitive advantage by shortening design cycles."

Other Maxwell v10 enhancements include:

o Ability to freeze permeability to derive a greater amount of engineering information

o Ability to determine the demagnetization operating point of permanent magnets

o Improved equivalent circuit model generation from the finite-element solution

o Improved geometry translation and meshing for IGES- and STEP-originating geometry

o Adaptive time steps in 2D that reduces computation time with 2D motion problems

o Ability to calculate core-loss coefficient from a loss curve
