Haestad Methods Delivers First Fully Customizable Modeling Solution with WaterObjects(TM)

WATERBURY, CT, USA-January 30, 2003-Haestad Methods took another leap forward in the advancement of water distribution modeling with the release of WaterObjects(TM), a full-featured programmer's toolkit for the civil engineering community.

What Is WaterObjects?

Originally used by Haestad Methods' research and development team to create WaterCAD® V6 and WaterGEMS(TM) V1, WaterObjects is an object-oriented application Software Development Kit (SDK). WaterObjects provides programmatic access to the features of the modeling software, enabling end users and third-party developers to build, access, and modify model databases to suit application-specific needs.

"WaterCAD and WaterGEMS were built by our engineers and programmers using WaterObjects," said Robert Mankowski, P.E., Director of Research and Development for Haestad Methods. "We are now offering our clients the very same tested, robust, and high-performance set of software tools that we depend on. I believe that WaterObjects will allow our customers to distinguish themselves as they utilize our technologies to create their own custom solutions."

WaterCAD and WaterGEMS were also built upon Haestad's non-proprietary, fully open GEMS(TM) database. The GEMS database can be directly accessed and manipulated using standard database querying software such as Access and Excel.

Who Uses WaterObjects?

WaterObjects is already being utilized in the development of enterprise solutions. Bristol Babcock, Inc., is working closely with Haestad Methods to develop an extensible solution linking its SCADA platforms with WaterCAD/WaterGEMS. "WaterObjects is an excellent match to the object-oriented database in our OpenEnterprise(TM) SCADA software," said Kevin Finnan, Director of Marketing for Bristol Babcock, Inc. "From our point of view, no other hydraulic model provides this strong an opportunity for integration."

Consultants and utilities routinely adapt the input and output from models to meet their specific project needs, to enhance their automation, and to set their capabilities apart from others in the industry. According to Scott Cattran, GIS Project Manager for Woolpert LLP, "Delivering application-level programmatic access to end users is something that industry-leading developers offer. For example, Autodesk® offers AutoLisp® and ObjectARX®; and ESRI® offers ArcObjects(tm) and MapObjects®. What is truly useful and unique about WaterObjects is that Haestad Methods is providing a set of programmable objects and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that is focused around the specific needs of the water utility. Having access to this tailored functionality right out of the box will greatly streamline delivery of my company's GIS enterprise integration services."

How Is WaterObjects Used?

With WaterObjects, anyone can directly access and manipulate pipe, pump, junction, valve, and tank and reservoir data; model scenarios; control states; and selection sets. Users can also store modifications directly in the model database where WaterCAD and WaterGEMS and/or other third-party WaterObjects' based applications can operate against them.

Programs developed with WaterObjects can run from a wide variety of other software, including Microsoft Office®, ArcMap, and AutoCAD® using VBA scripts. Users can also develop custom applications using all popular software development platforms, such as .NET, C++, Java, Visual Basic, C, and FORTRAN.

Developers can use WaterObjects' technology to:

Build reusable, automated processes for creating models from enterprise database systems, GIS systems, and existing computer models

Automate workflow to estimate load and demand allocations from meter and billing records, build SCADA system connections, and assign elevation and other attributes to hydraulic elements

Extend and customize tools for model skeletonization, calibration and validation, operational reporting, and QA/QC

Accomplish Internet and mobile-device data collection and dissemination

Develop other custom software extensions that tailor WaterCAD and WaterGEMS programs to perform tasks specific to the water utility.
