ILOG Delivers 'No Compromise' Business Policy Management

New JRules 6 Empowers Business Users, Provides Full-Productivity for IT, Facilitates Better Business-IT Alignment

PARIS and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 22 / -- ILOG(R) (Nasdaq: ILOG; Euronext: ILO; ISIN: FR0004042364) today unveiled the latest release of its market-leading Business Rule Management System (BRMS) software -- ILOG JRules(TM) 6. Representing a major leap forward in business user empowerment and business-IT alignment, the new release helps eliminate the trade-offs that exist between current BRMS products by providing strong support for both business users and IT. Now organizations do not have to compromise to satisfy both audiences. New innovations in JRules 6 include full life-cycle business rule management, a separate and easy-to-use rule authoring environment for business users, on-demand rule synchronization between business and IT teams, breakthroughs in performance and scalability, along with around 50 other new features.

Business rules are often hard-coded in business software, resulting in diminished business agility, increased costs and lost opportunities. By enabling business rules to be stored and managed separately from software applications, a BRMS is a key supporting technology for service-oriented architectures (SOA), business process management (BPM) and other IT modernization initiatives. The compelling benefits of a BRMS are leading to increased adoption rates, as mentioned in recent reports from IT research firms Forrester, Gartner and IDC. For example, in January, Forrester released the "Forrester Wave(TM): Business Rule Platforms Q106, Forrester Research Inc. January 4, 2006" noting that "interest in business rules platforms, as indicated by the volume of Forrester client inquiries on the subject and the high growth rates of most business rules platform vendors, is growing."

New ILOG JRules Addresses Market Gap
While the benefits of a BRMS are proven and product adoption is increasing, a major gap in product offerings has forced organizations into a trade-off between business rule products with good business user tools, but no IT or developer tools support, or vice versa.

"The promise of business rules is driving change in the market. Customer need for products usable by nonprogrammers and products useful in fast-changing front-office applications are driving new ideas. With no legacy in IT-focused products, vendors are introducing new ideas and features that put business users in the leading role and IT in a supporting role," said John Rymer, vice president, Forrester Research in the Forrester Wave.

JRules 6 addresses the trade-off issue by delivering these innovations to the market:

-- RuleCare provides business team members with their own web interface and rule-editing environment that is separate but synchronized with IT. It allows these teams to learn business rule management quickly using guided editors, templates and online help. RuleCare also provides testing and simulation tools for the business team to assess the business effectiveness of a policy change prior to deployment, tools to create and store reusable business scenarios and apply them against the business rules, allowing business users to perform "what-if" scenario testing.

-- RuleTech supports technical teams by providing the tools for applying best practices and processes to rule applications. This includes support for all Eclipse-supported Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) so developers can manage source code and rules together with a common IDE and Source Code Control repository. This eliminates the need to move from one tool to another during development, cutting development time. Support for executing rules in an SOA environment is also included, allowing rules and groups of rules to be deployed as decision services. This includes support for runtime security, logging and auditing that help to address SOA governance challenges.

-- FullCircle BRM, which refers to the tools and processes that enable full life-cycle enterprise business rule management. It enables a business rule management cycle that is independent of application development cycles while enabling synchronization between the business user and development environments. These features allow customers to work on several release cycles simultaneously, share and reuse rules among rule authors who possess different professional backgrounds and speak different languages.

"We use JRules as a key component of our InterConnect decisioning platform to give our customers added flexibility and control in managing their business rules," said Steve Uffman, group executive, Enabling Technologies, Equifax. "We look forward to leveraging JRules 6, to offer added benefits to business users, who are further empowered by the latest version of this leading-edge technology."

"Representing more than two million lines of new code and a three-year development effort, JRules 6 embodies our vision for enterprise-class business rule management that fully addresses the needs of all stakeholders -- policy managers, IT, developers and system administrators -- while building on our reputation for high-performance and scalability," said ILOG Chairman and CEO Pierre Haren. "By delivering BRMS without compromise, we are responding to market demands for better collaboration between IT and business users to dramatically improve agility and efficiency."

With JRules 6, ILOG advances its legacy of high-performance rule execution. Improvements to performance include the new RetePlus and Fastpath rule execution modes that represent breakthroughs in speed and scalability. In internal tests, ILOG JRules 6 was able to support more than 50 simultaneous business users editing rule bases of up to 100,000 rules.
