Software creates 3D CAD models from photography.

Press Release Summary:

FotoG® supports close-range photogrammetry, which allows creation of 3-dimensional models and extraction of precise measurements from film or digital photography. Automatic Target utilizes numerous target patterns that are placed around project area. After capturing photos of area, algorithms identify each target pattern and correlate them across images. Software uses auto-target locations for tie points, then labels and matches points automatically.

Automatically Create 3D CAD Models and Accurate Measurements from Photography

Major Milestone Reached in the Development of Close Range Photogrammetry Software (FotoG(TM))

BOULDER, COLORADO- Boulder, CO - Vexcel Corporation announces the achievement of dramatically increased automation in the field of close-range photogrammetry. Close range photogrammetry, or CRP, is an advanced but conceptually simple technology which allows the creation of 3-dimensional models and extraction of precise measurements from film or digital photography. Vexcel's CRP software, marketed commercially under the FotoG(TM) name, will include dramatically increased automation capabilities beginning in the summer of 2003. Vexcel's introduction of 'auto-targeting' functionality will provide FotoG users with the power to automate the CRP process, resulting in substantial savings in time and labor for diverse applications and engineering projects of all sizes.

"Most FotoG users are understandably much more interested in creating 3D models or extracting measurements than in getting bogged down in the details of photogrammetry," notes Dr. Jason Szabo, Vexcel's Manager of Close Range Engineering. "The new auto-targeting advancement puts the emphasis in the right place for our customers. Three-dimensional models can be created almost immediately from FotoG using this built-in functionality."

The main stages of the close range photogrammetry process consist of capturing photos of the subject, tying images together by identifying common points in overlapping pictures, and creating 3D CAD models of features found in the pictures. The Auto-Target feature eliminates the tedious process of manually selecting common points between overlapping images.

The Automatic Target method works by utilizing numerous unique target patterns that are placed around the project area. After capturing photos of the area of interest, specialized algorithms developed by Vexcel are able to uniquely identify each target pattern and correlate them across the images. Instead of the user manually picking tie points in the photos, the software uses the auto-target locations for tie points, then labels and matches those points automatically.

Founded in 1985 in Boulder, Colorado, Vexcel Corporation is an internationally recognized remote sensing company that specializes in Aerial and Close-Range Photogrammetry, Radar (SAR) Technologies, and Remote Sensing Ground Stations.
