Novell Completes Acquisition of Tally Systems, Ships ZENworks Asset Management

- New Asset Management product in ZENworks line tracks and audits assets to ensure corporate compliance

WALTHAM, Mass. -- April 25, 2005 -- Novell today announced it has completed the acquisition of Tally Systems Corp. to expand its Novell(R) ZENworks(R) systems management offering. Novell will ship Novell ZENworks Asset Management, a set of integrated tools with discovery and inventory, license management, and software usage and trend analysis capabilities next week. As a result, organizations can track systems information and assets across the enterprise to control software spending and ensure compliance with software license agreements and government regulations, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

"We have long seen the return on our ZENworks investment with automated software distribution and remote control," said Paul Pedron, City of Fresno senior network systems specialist. "The addition of Asset Management to the ZENworks product line adds even greater value. We will be able to continually track assets and monitor licensing compliance for more accurate departmental forecasts during budgeting and planning processes."

ZENworks Asset Management includes tools to automatically discover, identify and report hardware and software assets in the enterprise. The software compliance component provides a comparison of inventory with purchase and license records. Software usage capabilities report trends and details that can prevent the overbuying of software licenses and monitor the use of unauthorized applications. ZENworks Asset Management discovers and reports on the full range of IT devices-desktops, laptops, servers, routers, switches and hubs-and the software running on them. Asset information can then be securely accessed by individuals throughout the organization via Web-based tools for better decision making.

"Noncompliance with software usage rights can be extremely costly, with penalties exceeding $100,000, and also can result in negative publicity for a company," said Gartner Research Director Patricia Adams. "Products that offer inventory, usage and software distribution enable customers to monitor usage trends that can track the use of unauthorized applications and more accurately use software distribution to set and enforce corporate standards."

David Litwack, Novell senior vice president and general manager for Identity-Driven Products, said, "The combination of Novell ZENworks and the asset management expertise from Tally Systems provides a deeper level of lifecycle management for a company's diverse IT resources. This immediately extends Novell's asset management capabilities beyond other systems management vendors, particularly for compliance, which is a critical issue in today's business."
