Software assists in inverter duty motor configuration.

Press Release Summary:

Inverter duty RPM AC Motor Wizard v2.1 enables users to select inverter duty motors from 2-1,000 hp. With duty cycle calculator, users input values of load torque versus time, and Wizard computes values of RMS hp and RMS torque. Program then selects optimal NEMA or IEC frame size. Users can also specify motor frame size, amp rating, and inverter kVA required. Typical performance data and motor dimensions are displayed and can be printed out immediately.

Rockwell Automation Releases Upgrade of Reliance® RPM AC(TM) Motor Wizard

GREENVILLE, SC (March 15, 2004) Rockwell Automation has released a new version of the inverter duty RPM AC Motor Wizard, a revolutionary software program for selecting inverter duty motors from 2 to 1000 horsepower, is now available. This upgrade, now in CD format as version 2.1, contains a unique duty cycle calculator that will make the Wizard a more useful tool than ever before.

In the past the RPM AC motor frame selection from the Wizard was based only on continuous duty motors. With the addition of the duty cycle calculator, the user can now input values of load torque versus time, and the Wizard will compute the values of RMS horsepower and RMS torque. From this calculation, the Wizard will then select the optimum frame size, either NEMA or IEC, based on the actual duty cycle load. The motor selected may be a more compact, less expensive motor than the continuous duty frame size shown in catalogs.

The RPM AC Motor Wizard's patented technology is designed so that users with little understanding of AC induction motor theory and construction can provide the desired inputs and receive a customized RPM AC inverter duty design that matches the application requirements. The RPM AC Motor Wizard also allows the user to optimize the motor/drive combination to create the lowest cost and highest performance combination.

With minimal input of data, the RPM AC Wizard will instantly provide the user with the motor frame size, amp rating, and inverter kVA required. Typical performance data and motor dimensions are displayed and can be printed out immediately. The user can also select special high ambient and altitudes and service factor. The data is available in both NEMA and IEC formats, making it easy for customers to offer world solutions to motor requirements.

The Wizard also allows optimization of a motor to fit a specific inverter kVA, especially helpful for winding and unwind applications. In addition, a new torque mode allows users to directly input torque requirements for induction servo type applications.

Unlike some other catalog-style selection tools, the Wizard automatically assists in motor configuration/selection, especially for specialized or customized motors, by taking into consideration the operating characteristics of the motor, as well as inter-relationships of environmental, operational, and user-imposed limitations.

The RPM AC Motor Wizard, now updated to include the latest frame size enhancements, takes the guesswork out of inverter duty motor configuration and puts the power of knowledge in the hands of Reliance Electric(TM) customers.

The RPM AC Wizard can be downloaded from the web at www.reliance.com.
