IBM z/VSE V3.1 Generally Available

Overview
z/VSE is built on a heritage of ongoing refinement and innovation that spans four decades. z/VSE, the latest step in the ongoing evolution of VSE, is designed to help address needs of VSE clients with growing core VSE workloads, as well as those
who want to exploit Linux(TM) on zSeries® for on demand business
solutions or infrastructure simplification.

z/VSE Version 3 Release 1 (z/VSE V3.1) is designed to allow
IBM eserver zSeries servers to attach industry-standard Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) disk devices via zSeries Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) channels. In addition, z/VSE V3.1 adds support for the IBM TotalStorage® 3494 Virtual Tape Server (3494 VTS) and improves support for the 3494 Tape Library. z/VSE V3.1 also supports the IBM TotalStorage DS8000 and DS6000 series disk servers, the Enterprise Storage Server(TM) (ESS), selected new Advanced Copy functions, and the IBM TotalStorage 3592 Enterprise Tape Drive.

Language Environment® for VSE/ESA(TM) (LE/VSE) is now integrated in z/VSE V3.1 and is packaged as a component of VSE Central Functions Version 7.

z/VSE continues the focus on interoperability that began with
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5, and continued with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6 and VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7.

Where the service is offered locally, z/VSE V3.1 customers have a choice of electronic Internet delivery and CD-ROM shipment, in addition to 3480 compressed and 3590 cartridge tapes.

z/VSE V3.1 supports IBM eserver zSeries 800, 890, 900, and 990 as well as S/390® Multiprise® 3000 and S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server(TM) Generation 5 and 6, or equivalent. z/VSE can be run alone, or as a guest under z/VM® Version 4 or later.

z/VSE can execute in 31-bit mode only. It does not implement z/Architecture(TM), and specifically does not implement 64-bit mode capabilities. z/VSE is designed to exploit selected features of IBM zSeries hardware.

z/VSE is the preferred follow-on product for customers with VSE/ESA installed.
