Soft Starter protects motor and machine.

Press Release Summary:

ALTISTART® 48 line works with asynchronous motors with ratings from 208 to 690 Vac. Torque control during acceleration and deceleration limits stress on drive chain and reduces hydraulic transients. Starter monitors for overloads and underloads, and limits current and voltage drops when starting. It has Modbus and Ethernet TCP/IP, with FIPIO, Profibus DP, and DeviceNet available as options. PowerSuite test and commissioning software is available.

Exclusive Torque Control System Behind Latest High-Performance Soft Start From Square D / Schneider Electric

PALATINE, Ill. - July 29, 2002 - A new high-performance soft start from Schneider Electric combines superior torque control with easy network connectivity. The SQUARE D ALTISTART® 48 soft start features a patented Torque Control System (TCS) to provide maximum control of starts and stops, protecting both motor and machine. The new line of soft starts is designed for a wide range of asynchronous motors with voltage ratings from 208 to 690 VAC.

The ALTISTART 48 soft start combines high performance, simplicity of installation and ease of integration within control systems. Connectivity for remote access to factory systems and equipment is simplified with the built-in MODBUS protocol and Ethernet TCP/IP or other optional network protocols, including FIPIO, Profibus DP and DeviceNet. These communication functions enable control, monitoring and adjustment to be performed remotely.

The ALTISTART 48 is designed for commercial and industrial applications using pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors, as well as high-inertia machines such as centrifuges, grinders and crushers.

The patented TCS system ensures perfect control of the torque supplied to the motor during acceleration and deceleration by simple adjustment of the ramp, which limits stress on the drive chain or reduces hydraulic transients. Where fans, compressors and conveyors are installed, soft starting with the ALTISTART 48 minimizes shocks such as belt slippage and wear. In addition, the new soft start monitors for overloads and underloads (detecting broken belts, hard spot, clogging or jamming) and limits the current and voltage drops on starting. It also has catch-on-the-fly restarting of a fan turning in the opposite direction, and detects an incorrect direction of rotation. Where pumps and/or management of hydraulic transients are an issue, the ALTISTART 48 ensures gradual pressurization of the fluid in the pipe, reduction of water hammer and pressure surges.

Selecting the right ALTISTART 48 device is easy, with one rating for each standardized motor power rating. Wiring is simplified with top and bottom power connections, including removable control terminals and optimized factory presets that minimize parameter adjustments for users. All ratings include shorting/bypass terminations for user supplied AC1 or AC3 duty-rated contacts. ALTISTART 48 complies with international standards IEC, UL, CSA and DNV (marine and off-shore).

The new soft start is ready for use out of the box with minimal adjustment. PowerSuite Test and Commissioning Software is available for easy configuration and adjustments. The software is designed to run on any PC using the Microsoft Windows 95, 98, or NT operating systems, or Windows CE V3.0 for HP Jornada 525 and 548 pocket PCs.
