SMIC Empowers Its Agents Via the Web with New Processing Capabilities

WYNCOTE, Pa., Jan. 16 -- A series of processing capabilities collectively known as AgentXpress is unlocking policy management data stored in Security Mutual Insurance Company's legacy system and making it available to agents over the Internet. The system went live after a two month pilot conducted in partnership with the program's producer, IDP. Agents can now access claims and billing information, view policies online and generate loss run and expiration reports, as well as commission statements, via the new web- enabling program.

According to SMIC's Tom Ruane, president of the Ithaca, N.Y.-based property and casualty insurer, AgentXpress is delivering time-saving benefits to carrier and agent alike.

"It's a great tool," reports Ruane, whose company serves greater New York state through a network of 350 agents. "Our agents no longer have to call an 800 number on behalf of insureds to obtain answers on matters such as payment amounts, due dates, renewal dates and basic claims and policy information. Instead, they can access that all online and give it to their client instantly."

Ruane says that AgentXpress also saves SMIC time through reduced call volume and the use of human resources necessary to research and respond to questions. A case in point: "An agency on Long Island had been calling us three or four times a day, but now we no longer hear from them with routine inquiries," Ruane says.

Ease of use was important criteria in SMIC's decision to lease AgentXpress, which Ruane describes as user friendly. "I went through it with no training at all," he says. "You can simply conduct a data base search for a last name and find your insured."

IDP President and CEO Gary Gilbert underscores the value of AgentXpress' ability to free data from SMIC's legacy system.

"Companies of SMIC's size often have data on a technical platform or in a computer that is not accessible by the Internet," Gilbert says. "Our solution is to export data on a daily basis from these legacy systems and update a web- accessible data base that we recently developed for AgentXpress. That makes the legacy data instantly accessible for use by a company's agents and policyholders. It's a straightforward process that is delivering big benefits for our clients."
