New Overhead Crane Operator Certification Program

(February 7, 2005-Charlotte, NC) A new certification program for operators of overhead cranes was announced by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) and the Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA) at a press conference, during ProMat® 2005.

"This program is a first of its kind in the U.S. and is molded on the certification program we have developed for other types of cranes," explained Graham J. Brent, CCO executive director. "The program will provide effective performance standards for crane operators, and will provide a fair, independent and reliable assessment of operator knowledge and skill."

The test, which has been in development since 2003, will certify operators of cab-operated or floor- and pendant-operated five-ton cranes with three powered functions. "Based on their experience with other CCO tests, including a certification program for operators of mobile cranes, employers requested a similar program for operators of other equipment like overhead cranes," Brent said.

The program consists of a physical exam, a substance abuse test, a valid and reliable written exam covering 60 multiple-choice questions and a hand-on practical exam.

Certification of Crane Operators
NCCCO was formed in January 1995 as a not-for-profit organization to develop effective performance standards for safe crane operation to assist all segments of general industry and construction. By providing a thorough, independent assessment of operator knowledge and skills, NCCCO aims to enhance lifting equipment safety, reduce workplace risk, improve performance records, stimulate training, and give due recognition to the professional skill of crane operation. The establishment of NCCCO was the culmination of almost 10 years continuous work by representatives of all industries that use cranes. In essence, the NCCCO program was developed by industry for industry, and continues to be supported by it. For more information, visit the National Commission's Web site at www.nccco.org
