Windows® CE.NET Enabled Pentium® SBC Targets Embedded Industrial Applications

April 23, 2003 Embedded Systems Conference, San Francisco, CA - Embedded designers continue to require a fast, integrated hardware and software solution for harsh industrial environments. To meet this demand, WinSystems introduces their EBC-LP, an Intel 166 MHz Tillamook-based SBC with an operational temperature range from -40° to +85°Celsius preloaded with Microsoft's Windows® CE.NET operating system. Together, this combination speeds time-to-market for customers with applications in heavy manufacturing, COTS/military, transportation, pipeline, and machine control.

The EBC-LP is an EBX-compatible Pentium® SBC with video, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet controller, four serial channels, 48-bidirectional digital I/O lines, USB, LPT, and up to a 1 GB solid state disk. Plus, it has both a 16-bit PC/104 and PC/104-Plus connector to support additional expansion modules such as 802.11b wireless, modem, frame grabber, or specialty I/O. The 166 MHz Intel CPU provides performance over a much wider temperature range than a standard Pentium CPU without requiring fans or forced air-cooling. The supporting chipset provides the core logic that makes the board PC/AT compatible. It includes the DRAM controller, internal PCI bus and external PC/104 Bus interface logic, real-time clock, plus integrated peripherals including DMA, timer, interrupt, keyboard controllers. A 3.5"/5.25" floppy disk controller and PCI EIDE hard disk interface are also included. The EBC-LP is a small board and measures 5.75" x 8.0" (146mm x 203mm). This unit requires only +5 volts and typically draws 2.5 Amps with 64 Mbytes of SDRAM.

The EBC-LP's onboard high-performance PCI video controller with 2 Mbytes of video RAM drives both CRT and flat panels simultaneously. Windows® CE.NET works well for applications requiring video and networking support. A 10/100 Mbps compatible Ethernet LAN controller provides high-speed connection to conventional LANs. The fast Ethernet interface can also be used as a specialized high-speed communication link among intelligent embedded subsystems.

Microsoft's CE.NET is a comprehensive operating system platform with proven performance, reliability and flexibility. Its integrated, end-to-end tool set and familiar programming environment results in shorter system and application development times. It meets demanding deterministic performance requirements for a variety of device types with hard real-time response requirements including an average interrupt service routine (ISR) latency of 2.8 microseconds and average internet service thread (IST) latency of 17.9 microseconds on a Pentium 166 MHz processor. CE.NET utilizes a subset of the Microsoft® Win32® API, delivering a powerful programming paradigm familiar to over 6 million developers worldwide, ensuring a large developer talent pool.
