New Out of Position (OOP) Simulation Tools Help Manufacturers Comply with Federal Regulations, Increase Occupant Safety and Reduce Costly Physical Tests

SANTA ANA, Calif. - October 15, 2002 - MSC.Software Corp. (NYSE: MNS), the leading global provider of simulation software, services and systems, today announced the release of MSC.Dytran 2002 r2. The second release of MSC.Dytran 2002 features new simulation tools for occupant 'out of position' (OOP) testing to help manufacturers in the automotive and aerospace industries meet federal regulations and design safer products in less time and for less cost.

"MSC.Software works hard to help our customers solve problems and one area where we can have a large impact is by helping them efficiently meet strict governmental guidelines and make products like airbags safer," said Frank Perna, chairman and chief executive officer of MSC.Software. "Occupant safety issues are one of the most important applications of our technology within the automotive industry and the newest version of MSC.Dytran will have an immediate impact on reducing costly physical tests for every automobile manufacturer and airbag supplier around the world."

"During the past years we have established MSC.Dytran as our primary tool for airbag deployment analysis. We, therefore, welcome the advances made with this new version towards becoming a stand-alone solution for occupant simulations," said H.B. Helleman, Takata, Automotive Systems Laboratory, Inc.

MSC.Dytran 2002 r2 was developed specifically to help automotive manufacturers and suppliers comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208, which requires consideration of out-of-position occupants and children exposed to airbag deployment in passenger cars and light trucks. According to Standard 208, all automotive manufacturers must achieve 100% compliance by 2006. MSC.Dytran 2002 r2 is the most robust finite element analysis (FEA) solver available to manufacturers and suppliers and is a key component in helping companies come to full compliance.

In addition to applications in the automotive industry, aerospace manufacturers in the commercial and defense industries, including helicopter manufacturers, rely heavily on occupant safety testing during their design and processes and MSC.Dytran 2002 r2 provides them with a robust toolset to easily test many occupant-related interactions that occur with manned aircraft and helicopters.

MSC.Dytran is a general purpose, three-dimensional program for simulating the high-speed events and response of solids, structures, and fluids. Using MSC.Dytran, engineers can solve a wide variety of practical problems in such diverse industries as automotive, aerospace, defense, manufacturing, and shipbuilding. The program is designed to simulate and analyze extreme, short-duration events involving the interaction of fluids and structures, or problems involving the extreme deformation of structural materials. Typical applications include airbag deployment and occupant interaction in vehicle crashes, sheet metal forming, bird strikes on aircraft, explosive containment within aircraft structures, ship collision and grounding, projectile impact and penetration, drop tests, and fluid-sloshing effects on structures.

MSC.Dytran is available on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Linux and most UNIX workstations and servers. For more information on MSC.Dytran 2002 r2, please visit www.mscsoftware.com/products/
