Global Crossing Introduces Industry-Changing Carrier VoIP Community Peering Service

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Sept. 6 // -- Global Crossing (NASDAQ:GLBC) has introduced to carrier customers its VoIP Community Peering service, an industry-changing feature of the company's VoIP Outbound Service. This innovative service gives carriers the ability to more easily offer their business customers high-quality, end-to-end IP connectivity to support their end-users' IP applications and other advanced converged IP services.
Global Crossing VoIP Community Peering(TM) has been available to enterprise customers since June 2006. By introducing the service for carriers, Global Crossing is enabling them to more easily predict their costs, potentially attain higher margins on their Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, and offer flat-rate cost models to their end users.

Global Crossing Carrier VoIP Community Peering applies to all VoIP Local Service numbers on the Global Crossing network, including numbers provisioned within a carrier's network, to other carriers, and to any Global Crossing enterprise customer. This delivers the end-to-end quality of an all-IP connection and enables a lower, more predictable cost structure.

The service is unique because it lets carrier customers consolidate all the incoming voice traffic from their own customers and send all VoIP outbound calls to the Global Crossing network. Global Crossing does not apply per-minute charges on calls that are served by Global Crossing's VoIP Local Service, but rather a flat-rate monthly recurring charge for bandwidth to support a designated number of simultaneous calls. Those calls originate and terminate on Global Crossing's network and do not rely on the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) for completion.
This end-to-end, all-IP call flow lets carriers support more advanced, Session Initiation Protocol-based features by eliminating what are referred to as "islands of VoIP" that can occur in a VoIP-over-PSTN solution. This is significant because many VoIP deployments still depend on the PSTN to carry the voice signal during part of its journey, and this reliance on PSTN networks has created "VoIP islands" that do not link together. Linking these islands directly to one another using IP has proven to be an industry challenge -- a challenge Global Crossing has overcome to further help its customers to provide advanced VoIP features.
In addition, carrier customers can benefit from a combination of Global Crossing VoIP Outbound and VoIP Local Services to create alternative routing plans for traditional national or international PSTN off-net calling connections.
Global Crossing Carrier VoIP Community Peering further establishes Global Crossing -- a leader in VoIP technology and one of the first to deploy a global VoIP platform -- as an innovator of VoIP peering solutions for the industry.
