Xtended Design Architecture(TM)

Practical Innovation. Critical business. Virtual future.

The new IBM ® xSeries® scale out systems and IBM BladeCenter(TM) HS20 utilize Xtended Design Architecture(TM) to maximize server functionality as compared to industry standards and provide customers critical business advantages. IBM combines optimal levels of performance, availability, manageability and flexibility to deliver leadership solutions. Leveraging IBM's rich technology heritage and insight to client needs, these new systems extend industry-standard components to help increase IT productivity and help decrease computing costs.

xSeries innovations

Four new IBM xSeries servers utilize Xtended Design Architecture(TM) to maximize industry standards and provide customers critical business advantages. IBM combines optimal levels of performance, availability, manageability and flexibility to deliver leadership solutions. Leveraging IBM's rich technology heritage and insight into client needs, these new systems extend standard components to help increase IT productivity and help decrease computing costs.

Rack servers

For rack-dense environments, the new IBM eServer(TM) xSeries 336 and IBM eServer xSeries 346 servers include dual Intel® Xeon(TM) processors with 64-bit extension technology and IBM's Calibrated Vectored Cooling(TM) to deliver distinctive availability features. This IBM innovation first appeared in the IBM eServer BladeCenter HS20, one of the first blade solution available from a Tier 1 vendor with Intel® Xeon(TM) processors supporting Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology. Calibrated Vectored Cooling(TM) enables improvements in storage, memory and I/O. These include additional hot-swap hard drives for higher availability, performance and storage capacity; additional DIMM slots for memory mirroring and on-line spare; an optional integrated Remote Supervisor Adapter (RSA) II card preserves full PCI expandability; and PCI-Express high-speed I/O adapter support to increase performance. The x336 and x346 also feature optional hot-swap redundant power and fans for maximum uptime and reliability.

In addition, the IBM eServer xSeries 306 entry rack server provide 64-bit capability with the new Pentium 4 processor for an easy migration path at your pace.

Tower servers

Practical innovation is also packed into the new IBM eServer xSeries 236 and IBM eServer xSeries 226 64-bit tower servers. In addition to hot-swap redundant hard drive and power capabilities and up to 16GB1 of fast DDR2 memory, these new towers also feature powerful rich integrated functions to ease deployment and control costs. The x236 also offers a variety of diagnostic tools - ranging from basic management with ASF 2.0 support to integrated baseboard management controller (BMC) light path diagnostic capability and side-cover viewable information panel ... all designed to help increase server uptime and lower operating costs.

In addition, the new IBM eServer xSeries 206 provides 64-bit capability while continuing to support ongoing projects, and still starts at $499.

Systems management

These new systems are easy to deploy, and even easier to manage with the new IBM Director 4.20 systems management suite. Expanded Linux support, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0, provides aggregated, color-coded health status for easy system assessments. Other capabilities include single-click configuration and group support for software rejuvenation, enhanced security for remote console and power control, and additional standards-based alerting. These ease-of-use features allow you to focus on the processes that fuel your growth, and simplify the ones that keep your business running today.

Workstations

IBM is also extending the workstation family with the new IBM IntelliStation® Z Pro. This workstation includes the Intel® Xeon(TM) processors with Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology, as well as the latest technologies to power your most demanding applications. It has been optimized for compute-intensive applications, with a trio of PCI Express x16 graphics adapters from NVIDIA, up to 16GB1 of DDR2 memory, and an 800MHz system bus.

BladeCenter innovations

The new IBM eServer BladeCenter HS20 utilizes Xtended Design Architecture(TM) to maximize support of industry standards and provide customers critical business advantages. IBM combines optimal levels of performance, availability, manageability and flexibility to deliver leadership solutions. Leveraging IBM's rich technology heritage and insight to client needs, the new HS20 extends industry-standard components to help increase IT productivity and help decrease computing costs.

One of the first blade solution available from a Tier 1 vendor with dual Intel® Xeon(TM) processors with 64-bit extension technology, the HS20 was also the first system to include IBM's Calibrated Vectored Cooling(TM). This IBM innovation delivers distinctive availability features and improvements in storage, memory, I/O.
