New IBM eserver pSeries 650 Enhancements Offer Greater Flexibility with Capacity Upgrade on Demand and Faster Performance Using RIO-2 Adapters

Overview
To provide greater flexibility and performance in midrange servers, several new features and enhancements are now available for the pSeries(TM) 650 Model 6M2.

Your pSeries 650 system can be ordered with Capacity Upgrade on
Demand (CUoD), which lets you activate additional processors and
memory as needed. Up to six CUoD 1.45 GHz processors can be installed and later activated in increments of two processors. Up to 56 GB of CUoD memory can be installed and later activated in increments of 4 GB. Trial Capacity on Demand (Trial CoD) is a new function delivered with all pSeries servers supporting CUoD
resources beginning May 30, 2003. Those servers with standby CUoD
processors or memory will be capable of using a one-time, no-cost
activation for a maximum period of 30 consecutive days. This
enhancement allows for benchmarking of CUoD resources or can be used to provide immediate access to standby resources when the purchase of a permanent activation is pending.

Trial CoD is a complementary service offered by IBM. Although
IBM intends to continue it for the foreseeable future, IBM reserves the right to withdraw Trial CoD at any time with or without notice.

New RIO-2 adapters offer faster Remote I/O connections for the
pSeries 650 Model 6M2 and the 7311-D10 I/O drawer. The RIO-2
adapters are compatible with previously announced RIO adapters
and can be used together in the same system. To attain the higher
data speeds of RIO-2, all adapters in a Remote I/O loop must be RIO-2 adapters. These features are also available if you wish to add RIO-2 performance to your installed pSeries 650 systems.

An optional split SCSI backplane is available for logical partitioning or other applications that need independent groups of disk drives "under the covers." The split SCSI backplane has two sides with each side supporting two disk drives. Each disk drive can be 36.4 GB, 73.4 GB, or 146.8 GB.

The pSeries 650 Model 6M2 now supports attachment of the 7311-D20
I/O drawer, in addition to the 7311-D10 I/O drawer. RIO and RIO-2 speeds are supported for both I/O drawers.

Additional options are available for the 7014-T00 and 7014-T42 racks. The Rack Security Kit provides the hardware needed to add locks to the front and rear rack doors and secure the rack side panels.

Key Prerequisites
