IBM POWER Hypervisor Technology Delivers Enhanced Resource Management for the IBM eServer OpenPower 720 Server

Overview

POWER(TM) Hypervisor is an optional feature of the OpenPower(TM) 720 server that provides enhanced resource management.

POWER Hypervisor technology includes both LPAR and dynamic LPAR, enabling available system resources to be quickly and easily configured across multiple logical partitions to meet the rapidly changing needs of your business. With dynamic LPAR you can add new system resources such as hot-plug PCI adapters into your system's configuration without requiring a reboot. Up to 10 dynamic LPARs per processor (20 per two-way processor card) are supported in the stand-alone SMP server configuration on the OpenPower 720 server. Dynamic LPAR requires the use of a Hardware Management Console (HMC).

The POWER Hypervisor technology is one component in a set of technologies known as Advanced OpenPower Virtualization. The other component, called Virtual I/O Server (VIOS), is a software package that facilitates the sharing of physical I/O resources between partitions. These two offerings, ordered separately, can be combined with OpenPower systems to form an even more powerful and versatile solution. The Advanced OpenPower Virtualization technologies are designed to increase system use and flexibility, while simultaneously increasing overall availability.

Note: While VIOS is not required in order for the POWER Hypervisor technology to operate, the POWER Hypervisor technology must be installed for VIOS to function. VIOS is available separately through your IBM representative or an IBM Business Partner.
