NeoScale Systems Introduces Next Generation Tape Security Appliance Family

New CryptoStor(TM) Tape 700 is the Industry's First Security Appliance Designed for Simple Integration With Emerging High Performance Secondary Storage Solutions

MILPITAS, Calif., Jan. 31 - NeoScale Systems, the leading provider of enterprise storage security solutions, today announced availability of the CryptoStor(TM) Tape 700, a new family of tape media security appliances that helps organizations achieve information privacy and regulatory compliance by dynamically compressing, encrypting and digitally signing data as it is written to tape libraries or virtual tape systems. The new CryptoStor Tape appliances are architected to meet the performance demands of emerging tape libraries while transparently integrating with backup applications to support existing media management practices.

According to a recent Enterprise Strategy Group survey, over 60% of backed up enterprise data resides on storage media in unprotected, clear plain text, exposing this sensitive information to theft, unauthorized access, accidental misplacement or loss. 12% of survey respondents reported that they didn't even know if their backed up data was encrypted.

"Unencrypted backup tapes are a big security threat that could easily lead to intellectual property theft, compliance issues, and legal liabilities," said Jon Oltsik, analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, based in Milford, MA. "Conventional encryption approaches, such as software-based and host-based encryption solutions, have failed because they lengthen backup windows, create burdensome management complexity, and provide insufficient data protection. NeoScale's CryptoStor Tape provides a sensible, easily deployed solution that overcomes these limitations."

NeoScale's new CryptoStor Tape appliance provides robust, high performance hardware-based encryption and compression; seamless integration with all leading backup management software and hardware solutions; flexible policy management; and global key management support to ensure automated tape recovery from any location without sacrificing information security.

"The challenge many organizations face is finding a solution that secures tape content without impacting backup windows and operational practices," said Dore Rosenblum, vice president of marketing at NeoScale Systems. "NeoScale's CryptoStor Tape appliance addresses these challenges by offloading the security processing and key management from the servers while requiring no changes to an organization's backup storage applications and policies."

Recently, tape libraries have evolved to support higher performance backups, such as LTO-3 tape technology supporting 80MB/second throughput. The migration toward these newer, higher performance backup solutions have necessitated new tape security solutions that can scale to support the throughput of emerging tape drives while utilizing strong encryption to secure the content. CryptoStor Tape satisfies this need by aggregating compression and security processing across all physical and logical ports to ensure maximum performance for current and emerging tape drives. The system's strong AES-256 encryption ensures privacy of the tape content.

NeoScale's Global Key Management technology utilizes a tiered approach to key management to ensure that information can always be reliably restored:
-- Media layer -- Key-per-tape security for maximum granularity.
-- Appliance layer -- FIPS operation mode ensures that unencrypted keys never leave the appliance, and further supports M of N backup and recovery of system keys for appliance recovery.
-- Data Center layer -- Clustering support automatically shares tape keys and policy data to ensure automated tape recovery via any clustered tape security appliance.
-- Enterprise layer -- Worldwide tape recovery from any authorized, networked CryptoStor appliance or CryptoStor Tape Recovery Software.

NeoScale has been tested for interoperability with leading backup applications and tape libraries to verify compatibility. Tested backup applications include CA, EMC Legato, HP, SyncSort, Tivoli, VERITAS, and others. Tested tape libraries included technology from ADIC, EMC, Fujitsu, Overland Storage, Quantum, Sony and StorageTek(R).

"Security of removable media has become a business imperative for many organizations," said Cameron van Orman, director of corporate alliances at StorageTek. "As a TekAlliance partner, NeoScale has completed interoperability testing with StorageTek's industry-leading automated tape solutions to provide our joint customers with a reliable data privacy solution for backup media. This is consistent with our goal of making backup and recovery systems reliable, simple and less labor intensive."

Key Product Features
NeoScale's CryptoStor Tape seamlessly integrates into networked storage environments to secure tape media with no changes to the backup applications or media management operations. Key features include:
