Scintera Announces Updated, 10GBASE-LRM Compliant EDC Device

Using a unique adaptable architecture, Scintera's SCN3142(R) IC has been updated to meet the latest IEEE 802.3aq specification.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 14 / -- Scintera, Inc., the leading developer and provider of advanced signal processing semiconductor solutions for high-speed communications, today announced immediate availability of its updated SCN3142(R) Electronic Dispersion Compensation Engine(R) (EDCE(R)). The device is designed to meet the comprehensive stressed receiver requirements defined in the latest specification of the IEEE 802.3aq 10GBASE- LRM standard. This standard defines a low cost physical layer interface for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) over legacy multimode fiber, enabling enterprise customers to utilize their existing fiber infrastructures to upgrade their networks.

Designed based on Scintera's Gigabit Signal Processor(TM) CMOS technology, the SCN3142(R) combines "plug and play" operation, robust adaptation and low power to enable the delivery of low cost 10GBASE-LRM optical transceivers. The IC provides the basis for a flexible platform due to its small size (5mm x 5mm package) and low 700mW power dissipation. Using the device, customers can save valuable engineering effort and reduce time to market in generating multiple form factors including XENPAK, X2 and the emerging XFP.

"The market is ripe for a low cost version of 10GE that can be utilized by the existing fiber installations in the enterprise. Using a serial implementation, 10GBASE-LRM provides the economics, power and form factor to enable ubiquitous deployment," said John Monson, vice president of marketing at Scintera. "The availability of the robust and flexible SCN3142 EDC has provided our customers a head start to implement this cost effective 10GBASE- LRM solution."

More on the IEEE 802.3aq 10GBASE-LRM Standard

The IEEE 802.3aq task force is chartered with defining a physical layer specification for low cost 10GE over 62.5 µm (FDDI-grade) and 50 µm multimode fiber links. The current version of the standard (Draft 2.4) is planned to be promoted to Sponsor Ballot (Draft 3.0) status this week at the IEEE 802.3 Plenary meeting, taking place in Vancouver, Canada. The final version of the standard is planned to be ratified in July 2006.
