Adept Technology Introduces Four New Scara Robots with Adept's SmartServo(TM) Architecture

New Adept Cobra(TM) Robots Contain Amplifiers and Controller Inside Robot to Lower Costs and Simplify Installation

Livermore, California - April 14, 2003 - Adept Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTK), a leading manufacturer of flexible automation for the semiconductor, electronics, fiber optic, telecommunications, and life sciences industries, today announced the introduction of four new models in their Adept Cobra product line. The new Adept Cobra Smart600(TM) and Adept Cobra Smart800(TM) robots contain an embedded controller in the arm and have no external electronics. The new Adept Cobra s600(TM) and Adept Cobra s800(TM) robots are offered with the Adept SmartController(TM) and provide advanced functionality such as vision guidance, conveyor tracking and multiple robot control. All four new robots contain power amplifiers and a servo controller inside the robot, and utilize the Adept SmartServo architecture, which replaces hundreds of wires and connections with a single cable, using the FireWire(TM) (IEEE-1394) based high-speed control bus, reducing costs, increasing reliability and simplifying installation.

"The new Adept Cobra robots are the last phase in implementing the Adept SmartServo architecture across all of the Adept product line", said Charlie Duncheon, executive vice president. "Adept SmartServo more than aggressively lower costs, provide more flexibility, and deliver higher performance - it opens the door to more universal use of robot systems. There are many industries that want to automate, but the cost of installation and operation of traditional robots is a barrier. The new Adept Cobra Smart600 & Smart800 robots are fully self-contained and are more like an automation appliance than a robot. You simply connect power, plug in a PC to program it, disconnect the PC and go. You no longer need to be an automation expert to install and deploy these simple, yet powerful robots."

What sets the Adept Cobra Smart600(TM) and Adept Cobra Smart800(TM) apart from all other robots is Adept's exclusive SmartAmp(TM) technology - these are the only industrial SCARA robots to include all the controls, amplifiers and I/O inside the robot. The robots are capable of running completely standalone under the Adept MicroV+(TM) operating system and programming language, without the need for an external controller, electronics, or breakout box. Robot installation is reduced to mounting the robot and connecting power. Adept Cobra Smart600 & Smart800 robots can be deployed quickly and easily and controlled from commands from PC programs, Digital I/O, or a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).

Using the Adept SmartController(TM) and Adept SmartServo(TM) architecture, the Adept Cobra s600(TM) and Adept Cobra s800(TM) robots are designed to offer maximum flexibility and scalability, dramatic cable reduction, and unique cost-saving expansion capabilities. These robots support high-performance options, including vision-guided motion, conveyor tracking, auxiliary servo axes, and general machine control. Additionally, up to four of the new Adept Cobra(TM) robots can be run on a single Adept SmartController(TM) for significant installation savings. The new robots will be showcased at the International Robot and Vision Show, June 3-5, in Rosemont (Chicago), IL. Shipment to customers is scheduled for June 2003.
