silex Enables Affordable Network Scanning

Establishes Alliance With Kodak to Co-Market New Scanner Server

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 23 -- silex technology america, Inc. today announced it will begin a corporate initiative to provide workgroup scanner manufacturers and users with the silex SX-5000U2 USB 2.0 Hi-speed device server giving the capability to affordably connect nearly all USB scanners directly to a network. The move allows businesses of all sizes to maximize productivity and eliminate costs by conveniently adding a scanner to the network instead of requiring a dedicated personal computer.

silex today also announced it has become an authorized Independent Software Vendor (ISV) for Eastman Kodak Company. The SX-5000U2 can be used to network Kodak scanners, making network scanning available to all Kodak i30 and i40 scanner users.

silex will demonstrate scanner network connectivity with an SX-5000U2 USB device server and a Kodak i40 scanner at the Kodak Breakaway Conference in San Antonio Feb. 23-25.

"We are very pleased that silex has become an Independent Software Vendor," said Sue Cardot, director of marketing, US&C, Kodak. "Their expertise in providing network connectivity capabilities for USB devices of all types will increase the value and usability of Kodak's i30 and i40 scanners to a large group of users and applications."

Saving and storing documents for long periods of time is a growing trend. As a result, companies are scanning documents more than ever before -- business papers, contracts, legal briefs, graphics, and even photos. The ability to share a scanner among many users increases productivity and lowers overall costs associated with IT management and equipment. Scanners are also becoming simpler to use, which increases the volume of document scanning and allows small to medium businesses to follow the trend of large corporations without purchasing large and expensive scanning equipment.

"Business users are already familiar with networked devices such as printers, digital copiers and multi-function printers," said Keith Sugawara, silex vice president of networking. "In order to join with these networked devices, single function scanner manufacturers need to offer network connectivity for their scanners. The SX-5000U2 makes this possible by easily connecting scanners to a network."

According to a 2004 study of 640 corporate scanner users conducted by InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, over half of respondents said that network scanner connectivity is important or will be in the future.

"Business users like the idea of sharing high cost devices," said Susan Moyse, a consultant with InfoTrends/CAP Ventures. "We believe the future of document scanning in corporations will have a network component."

The silex SX-5000U2 is a simple-to-use, four-port USB device server utilizing USB 2.0 Hi-speed for fast performance. It connects directly to a 10/100 Ethernet network. Up to four scanners, or other USB devices, can be connected directly to the SX-5000U2 for use by everyone on the network. With an added USB hub, up to nine devices can be connected.
