Sapphire Windows Withstand High Pressures



Custom fabricated and highly durable sapphire windows for use as viewports, protective covers, and front surface optics in hostile environments are available from Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, Rhode Island.

Meller Sapphire Windows feature Moh 9 surface hardness for optimum abrasion resistance and a 3" dia. by ¼" thick window, for example, can withstand pressures up to 10,000 psi. Manufactured to specification, these windows are second only to diamond in terms of hardness and are impervious to water, most acids, alkalis, and harsh chemicals to approx. 1,000ºC.

Available in sizes from ¼" to 10" dia. And ½ mm to 1" thick, Meller Sapphire Windows can be fabricated with flatness held to 0.5 fringes of HeNe and parallelism from 20 to 2 arc/secs. with ±1.2 microns piece-to-piece thickness uniformity per lot. Coated windows are ideal for use as viewports in furnaces and general high-pressure and vacuum environments.
