RiskWatch Announces New Assessment Software for Electricity Producers Using NERC Standard

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Dec. 7 /- RiskWatch, Inc. announced today that it has completed a twelve-month project to create a customized version of the RiskWatch software to assess the IT security issues of electrical power company systems, using the new Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) elements 002 - 009 of the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC).

Swindon, RiskWatch Director, said, "This software will be a tool for the electrical power industry to use to evaluate their IT infrastructure security profile in an accurate, traceable and systematic way. The software, built on the RiskWatch Information Systems(TM) base, makes the assessment process much faster and easier and provides a benchmarking capability that can benefit the entire industry."

NERC is a nonprofit New Jersey corporation whose members are eight regional reliability councils whose members come from all segments of the electric industry: investor-owned utilities; federal power agencies; rural electric cooperatives; state, municipal and provincial utilities; independent power producers; power marketers; and end-use customers. These entities account for virtually all the electricity supplied and used in the United States, Canada, and a portion of Baja California Norte, Mexico.

The changes taking place in the electric industry have altered many of the traditional mechanisms, incentives, and responsibilities for maintaining reliability to the point that the voluntary system of compliance with reliability standards is no longer adequate. In response to these changes, NERC has promoted the development of a new mandatory system of reliability standards and compliance that would be backstopped in the United States by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
