Intermec Introduces Intellitag Ready-To-Go Retail RFID

o Includes integrated hardware, software and professional services
o Allows retail suppliers to begin integrating RFID into operations

EVERETT, Wash., June 6, 2003 - Intermec Technologies Corp. today introduced Intellitag® Ready-To-Go Retail RFID, an integrated package of hardware, software and professional services designed to give retail suppliers everything they need to develop a pilot application for radio frequency identification (RFID) pallet and case tracking. Intermec is announcing the new package as part of its presence at Retail Systems' annual conference, held this week in Chicago.

Intellitag Ready-To-Go Retail RFID provides the means to begin development of a complete RFID system for retail supply chain pallet and case-level tracking. Major retailers have announced they will begin requiring pallets and cases of merchandise to be tracked using RFID systems.

The new Intellitag RFID retail kit offers the hardware, including Intellitag RFID tags and readers, software and professional services, all necessary components for designing and installing an RFID system.

RFID, a complement to the retail industry's current bar code-based tracking systems, allows retailers and their suppliers to automatically track inventory throughout an entire supply chain. RFID automatic data collection does not require line of sight or manual scanning as do bar code-based systems. For example, information about RFID-tagged cases on a pallet can be read automatically as the pallet passes through a doorway, rather than requiring cases to be individually manually scanned.

Intermec's Intellitag RFID read/write technology allows information about goods to be updated as they make their way through a supply chain. Intermec Intellitag offers two additional powerful advantages: a commitment to interoperability and the ability to meet existing and developing RFID standards, both critical investment protections for companies adopting new technologies.

"We call it 'RFID that works,'" said Business Development Manager Mike Sitek, who leads Intermec's retail initiatives. "Intermec has 20 years of experience in supply chain technology solutions for retail, logistics and distribution applications. We don't make just RFID tags. Intermec is the only company to offer a truly integrated approach. From our RFID readers, wireless LANs, scanners and terminals to the expertise of our professional services organization, Intermec's strength is the ability to offer one, integrated system."

"Well-organized supply chains always will require a combination of technologies, each to suit its purpose," said Intermec Vice President James Evans, who leads Intermec's Intellitag business development activities. "RFID, as part of an integrated system, offers business results compelling enough that major retailers will be requiring it from their suppliers."

Intermec's Intellitag RFID already is at work throughout the world in wide-ranging applications, from providing inventory and pallet tracking in Metro AG's Future Store in Germany to increasing levels of access control at U.S. border crossings.
