Fairchild's New Linear RF Power Amplifier Provides Industry- Leading EVM Performance for 802.11b/g WLAN Applications

RMPA2453 offers low power consumption, excellent linearity and low-profile leadless packaging

South Portland, Maine-June 23, 2004-Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) announces the RMPA2453, a linear RF Power Amplifier Module (PAM) for high-performance Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) applications in the 2.4-2.5 GHz frequency band. Optimized for 802.11b/g applications, the RMPA2453 features industry-leading Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) performance of 2.5%. The linear power amplifier's low power consumption and excellent linearity are the result of Fairchild's proprietary InGaP Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (HBT) technology. The high-performance RMPA2453 power amplifier internally matches both the input and output to 50 Ohms, and provides an on-chip power-sensing detector with dual power-saving shutdown options.

"The RMPA4253's superior linearity is evidenced by its 2.5% EVM performance-one of the industry's best within the 802.11 b/g band," said Russ Wagner, general manager of Fairchild's RF power products group. "Fairchild is shipping high volumes of this device due to its superior EVM, low power consumption and matched PA module."

According to Boston-based Strategy Analytics, a global research and consulting firm, the WLAN chipset market is expected to reach $757M in 2004, with unit shipments showing a compound annual growth rate of 32%.

Key features and specifications of the RMPA2453 linear power amp include:
o 2.5% EVM at 18 dBm output provides superior linearity;
o Matched PA module operating with 3.3 V single supply minimizes the need for peripheral components, reducing overall BOM costs;
o Two power-saving shutdown options (bias and logic control) minimize power consumption while maintaining performance;
o Integrated power detector with 20 dB dynamic range reduces BOM; and
o Ideal for use in WLAN routers, access points and adapter cards, and USB dongles.

Fairchild offers an extensive portfolio of high-volume components for the wireless communications industry, including HBT and pHEMT GaAs MMICs, transmit and receive modules and components for handsets, WLAN systems, wireless base stations, data communications systems, and millimeter wave systems.
