Original Press Release:

Oracle Creates Oracle(R) Retail to Help Retailers Achieve Faster Concept-to-Market, Localized Merchandising and Improved Customer Shopping Experiences

Retailers Can Leverage the Best Retail Expertise and Technology Solutions From Oracle, Retek and ProfitLogic From a Single Source

ORACLE OPENWORLD, SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 20 / -- Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) today announced it has created Oracle(R) Retail, a new brand that brings together the best retail expertise and technology of Oracle and the former Retek and ProfitLogic companies. Oracle Retail teams with retailers to deliver tangible financial, operational and strategic business improvements, including faster concept-to-market, localized merchandising and improved customer shopping experiences. With its comprehensive and open solutions, Oracle Retail provides retailers with more choices for improving performance and increasing sales for maximized profitability.

Oracle Retail represents the solutions, intellectual property, expertise and 1,900 combined customer relationships of Oracle, Retek and ProfitLogic. With its best-of-breed merchandising, supply chain and store operations applications, Oracle Retail helps address retailers' business problems as well as uncover opportunities for improvement. These retail applications are fused with best-in-class Oracle enterprise software, middleware and database application tools and backed by Oracle global sales and support. The Oracle Retail team is composed of global industry experts from around the globe who have held executive positions at retail companies such as Tesco, Best Buy, Ann Taylor, Nordstrom, Mervyn's, Dress Barn and Gianni Versace.

"Before Oracle Retail was created, each individual company (PeopleSoft, Retek and ProfitLogic) offered a compelling set of applications and technology for the industry," said Oracle Retail General Manager, Duncan Angove. "Now, retailers can team with Oracle Retail to address one particular business need or all of their needs with a common view of customers, demand and inventory across the entire enterprise."

According to Gartner Retail Research Director, Hung LeHong, "Competition is forcing retailers to think outside the box -- especially the big box. Competing with large square footage stores with the same products throughout the chain has become less effective. Creating smaller format stores, offering unique and local assortments and increasing fashion and short lifecycle products all help retailers differentiate themselves from the competition and serve the local customer." LeHong continues, "However, most retailers' existing technologies are focused on efficiency and not well suited to execute these new strategies. Retailers are looking for a new generation of technologies that infuse insight into their merchandising processes in order to enable this new way of doing business."

Delivering Faster Concept-to-Market

Keeping fresh and appealing merchandise in the stores is a key goal for many retailers. Oracle Retail can help achieve this goal by enabling retailers and suppliers to share information during design and testing to reduce the time it takes to deliver a concept to market, improve service levels and reduce inventory and overstocks.

"In order to ensure fresh merchandise for our customers, we are making merchandising the heart of our operations, building upon the Oracle database," said Stage Stores Chief Information Officer, Jeff Kish. "We have created visibility across our organization -- our stores, customer demand, inventory, financials and the supply chain are all linked together."

Localizing Merchandise

To maximize profitability, retailers are focusing on merchandising differently to cater to local markets. By tapping into customer demand information, Oracle Retail provides retailers with the insight and tools they need to better understand customer preferences in multiple regions, and assort, allocate, price and promote based on local markets. Retailers can better manage the entire merchandise lifecycle by ensuring that all decisions tie to both customer demand and inventory supply.

"The combination of Oracle, Retek and ProfitLogic is appealing on many levels, but for me the real standout is the ability to integrate planning, optimization and execution on one common platform," said Toys "R" Us Vice President of Systems Development, Dion Rooney.

Tailoring the Shopping Experience

Retailers understand the connections between delivering excellent shopping experiences, customer service and increasing sales. Oracle Retail can help retailers capitalize on this opportunity by providing insight into local markets and customers, better control over inventory and the ability to empower employees with this information.

Retailers Tesco, Giorgio Armani, Overstock.com and others use Oracle Retail customer relationship and point-of-sale solutions to increase sales and improve profitability. "The Oracle Database has already helped us address critical data management challenges and Oracle Fusion Middleware was a natural option to create a technology infrastructure that enables us to focus on our customers," said Senior Vice President of Technology at Overstock.com, Shawn Schwegman. "We chose Oracle CRM because of its information-driven approach to service. Leveraging customer data across the phone, Web and email contacts earns loyalty by providing a consistent, personalized experience for our customers."
