Remote Digital I/O connects to fieldbus.

Press Release Summary:

Compact Model DC302 connects common discrete input/output devices to Foundation(TM) fieldbus H1 network operating at 31.25 kbit/sec. Device combines power, control, networking, and I/O in single, DIN rail-mounted unit. It supports 16 discrete inputs and has 8 outputs powerful enough to drive solenoid and other dc loads. Outputs can be controlled via library of function blocks that provide PLC discrete logic capabilities, including latches and Boolean functions.

Smar Introduces DC302 Fieldbus Remote I/O

All-in-one device simplifies integration of fieldbus and conventional I/O

HOUSTON, Texas, June 13, 2002 - Smar International Corp. today announced the introduction of the DC302 fieldbus remote I/O, an innovative solution for integrating common discrete input/output devices in a FOUNDATION(TM) fieldbus control system. The world's first device implementing new flexible function block technology, DC302 simplifies the transition to a fieldbus architecture.

An integral component of Smar's SYSTEM302 enterprise automation system, DC302 integrates with other FOUNDATION-compliant systems and devices and can be configured from any standard fieldbus tool. The compact device, which combines power, control, networking and I/O in a single, DIN rail-mounted unit, makes it possible to distribute I/O at various locations in the field and connect devices such as limit switches, push buttons, lights, on/off solenoid valves, pumps -and conveyors directly to an H1 (31.25 kbit/s) FOUNDATION fieldbus network.

According to Marcelo Dultra, Smar's general manager, North America, DC302 provides a versatile, cost-effective approach for migrating existing plant controls to the robust functionality of FOUNDATION fieldbus. "With the release of DC302, Smar has eliminated the constraints on end users who want to realize the full benefits of fieldbus technology, but must integrate existing, traditional discrete I/O," said Dultra. "This innovative device makes the path forward to fieldbus seamless and easy."

DC302 supports 16 discrete inputs, and 8 outputs powerful enough to drive a solenoid and other DC loads, via an extensive library of dynamically instantiable function blocks. The instantiable function blocks provide great flexibility in configuring control strategies, enabling both logic and regulatory control functions in the field. The flexible function blocks provide typical PLC discrete logic capabilities, including latches and Boolean functions (AND, OR, NAND, TIMERS, etc.). This makes DC302 ideal for batch and hybrid control applications requiring interlocks and sequencing.

With DC302, conventional discrete I/O can now interoperate with fieldbus devices on the same network, and in the same control loop. Only a single programming language is needed, regardless of I/O type. DC302 also allows users to configure control schemes while maintaining single-loop integrity. The flexible function block's internal checking and interpreter function allows any open, FOUNDATION-compliant host to configure the control strategy. A Link Master capability provides a backup Link Active Scheduler (LAS) for greater availability of network communications.

Additionally, DC302 reduces overall system hardware requirements while delivering significant installation time and cost savings. The unit requires less panel space and hard wiring than other remote I/O solutions, and can be installed in close proximity to sensors and actuators, thereby eliminating the long wire runs and associated marshaling panels and cable trays required for conventional I/O.
