ThinkIO-P: Kontron's Fanless Rack-Mount PC With Intel® Pentium® M Processor

Master of the DIN Rail

Ulm, Germany, 27 September, 2005 - With ThinkIO-P, Kontron Industrial Control (a division of Kontron Applications) introduces a new class of powerful modular rack-mount flat PCs (depth of 70 mm) that can fit into any control cabinet on the market. The system is completely enclosed and fanless; it can be equipped with processors ranging from a 600MHz Intel® Mobile Celeron processor with 64KB L1/0KB L2 cache up to a 1.4GHz Intel® Pentium® M processor, making it considerably faster than its little brother, which takes an Intel® Pentium® MMX-compatible processor. The ThinkIO-P features an industrial-strength connection system for the smart terminals on the highly granular Wago I/O System 750 and 753, which offer the user flexible, application-specific I/O configuration. Key applications for the ThinkIO-P are in industrial machinery and mid to high-complexity system controllers.

The passively cooled ThinkIO-P is built into a robust aluminum housing and offers not only high computing power and direct connection with the Wago I/O System but also up to 1 GB of RAM, up to 1 GB Flash, 1-2 MB of battery-buffered RAM, a customizable CompactFlash card and standard PC interfaces (2 x USB, DVI analog and digital, 1 x serial). 2 independent Fast Ethernet interfaces that include routing/bridging for daisy chaining, 2 optoisolated digital I/Os (24 V DC) and optional field buses (Profibus, CAN or DeviceNet interfaces) offer optimal control for both state-of-the-art and classic industrial networks and can also perform gateway and firewall functions for vertical integration. User interfaces up to 30 meters (nearly 100 feet) away can be connected to the system via an optional Long-Distance HMI. Support is currently provided for Windows XP Embedded and Linux operating systems, and a watchdog timer and a real-time clock round out the feature set.

Connection of the Wago I/O System 750/753 is simple: once plugged in, an I/O module is automatically recognized by the system. In just a few steps, a customized open control platform can be created. This control platform is also available as an IEC 61131-3-compliant soft PLC. Options for an OPC server and/or WebServer are available.

The ThinkIO-P will be available in December 2005. Thanks to our use of exclusively Intel embedded processors, we are able to guarantee long-term availability of the overall solution.
