Cherokee International Addresses Telecom Applications with New 5:1 Fixed-Ratio Quarter Brick Bus Converter

DC/DC 9.6 volt converter offers high current and ultra high efficiency

Tustin, Calif., July 12, 2005 - Cherokee International (NASDAQ: CHRK), a leading manufacturer of power supplies, today launched its 5:1 fixed-ratio, quarter-brick, isolated intermediate bus converter, the CBQ5. With an ultra high efficiency up to 97 percent, this converter delivers 9.6 volts (V) at 33 amps (A) with an unprecedented maximum power density up to 245 watts (W) per cubic inch and measures just 1.45 inches by 2.3 inches by .44 inches. This converter is ideal for wider-range, input-voltage requirements for North American central office and telecom applications such as optical networks, routers, enterprise servers, and storage area networks.

The CBQ5 bus converter offers the telecom sector a cost-effective solution that functions well with today's point-of-load (POL) and discrete circuit designs that power state-of-the-art microprocessors, other chipsets, and converters. Unlike typical intermediate-bus-architecture (IBA) converters which step down a regulated 48V, the Cherokee International CBQ5 converter operates over a wide input range of 38-55V to account for unregulated energy or battery systems that typically power telecom environments. The converter steps down the voltage to a fixed 5:1 ratio, providing a 9.6V output from a 48V nominal input. The CBQ5 converter comes in a standard quarter brick footprint and provides full power, up to 350W, in extreme operating ambient conditions of 70 degrees Celsius at 300 linear feet per minute. The converter delivers ultra-high efficiencies, and as a result, very little heat is dissipated. It is an excellent choice for intermediate bus applications where multiple output voltages are required and a 9.6V rail will be used to power POL devices.

Pricing and Availability

The CBQ5 (part number CBQ53348H1) is available in open-frame and base-plate versions as well as both positive and negative logic modules and is priced starting at $32 for quantities of 1,000 units. Samples are available now through Cherokee International.
