New PWM Controller Delivers Power Savings and High Reliability in Off-Line SMPS and DC/DC Converter Applications
San Jose, Calif.-December 17, 2002- Fairchild Semiconductor International (NYSE: FCS) announces the FAN7556, a fixed frequency, voltage mode PWM controller targeting off-line SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) and DC/DC converter applications requiring minimal external components. Typical applications include office equipment such as faxes and printers. With a power saving mode current of 200uA (typical) and stand-by current of 100uA (typical), the FAN7556's low power consumption means high efficiency in energy-saving designs. The FAN7556 features a current sensing comparator, a trimmed oscillator for precise duty cycle control, a temperature compensated reference, and a high current totem pole output ideally suited for driving a power MOSFET.
The new FAN7556 adds reliability by providing over-voltage protection (OVP), over-current protection (OCP), and over-load protection (OLP) with a built-in auto-restart circuit. The device's broad operating temperature ranges from -25°C to +125°C. In addition, the FAN7556 incorporates an on/off control and a soft-start circuit. This product is available in both the DIP-8 and SOP-8 packages. Used in conjunction with complementary power MOSFETs and high performance Power Factor ICs from Fairchild, the FAN7556 enables implementation of SMPS designs that provide high efficiency and allow for regulatory compliance with relevant standards for harmonic emission.
