Trumatic 2020 Rotation: Fast and Accurate Punching in a Compact Machine

FARMINGTON, Conn., May 2, 2001, Designed and manufactured by TRUMPF in the United States, the new TRUMATIC 2020 Rotation (TC 2020 R) offers customers unprecedented accelerations and punching speeds, without sacrificing accuracy, in a 4 by 8 foot sheet format. An optional automation feature is compact, affordable and easy-to-use.

Equipped with a 50 by 100 inch working range, the ability to handle 4 by 8 foot sheets, and optional automation, the TC 2020 R offers users a turnkey processing package within a sensible budget.

Among the special features on this machine are a new Gantry drive, a fully integrated linear tool changing rail, and an open architecture, Pentium-based PC control. These and other unique design features permit the TC 2020 R to achieve accelerations and "true production" punching speeds which are unprecedented for a punch machine of its size.

"Most sheetmetal fabricators are faced the challenge of how to optimize production efficiencies while performing short - and typically urgent - production runs," says Mike Morissette, product manager for punching machines at TRUMPF Inc. "In a short-run environment, the costs of trial runs, performing tooling changeovers, and maintaining parts accuracy can eat away at profits. The TC 2020 R meets this challenge head-on."

Due in part to its single-station punching head design, a complete tooling changeover on the TC 2020 R can be accomplished in less than one minute. The machine's linear tool magazine can hold up to 19 tool cartridges. This can be expanded to up to 190 tools through the use of TRUMPF Multitool® punching tools.

"It is important to note that our punching machines do not use turrets," emphasizes Morissette. "The TC 2020 R is no exception. In a quick-change environment, there is no substitute. Customers unfamiliar with our approach are always amazed when we demonstrate how quickly we can change out a set of tools. A turret punch just can't compare."

The rigidity of the coordinate guide system enables the TC 2020 R to achieve the highest possible production speeds without sacrificing part quality or working range. And, the machine's ability to punch industry standard 4 by 8 foot sheets gives the user more freedom to nest parts and optimize material utilization. Sensors and the automation's independent vacuum system ensure that only one sheet is selected at a time and that each sheet is loaded and unloaded correctly - ideal for unattended operation.

"One of the most impressive features of the TC 2020 R is how little floor space the automation requires - just four feet more than what is already required for the TC 2020 R," says Morissette. Each TC 2020 R is factory-prepped to accommodate the optional automation package. "So customers have the flexibility to purchase the automation as an add-on at a later date," Morissette adds.

"An operator simply loads a ToPs generated program into the machine, programs the number of sheets needed, adds the raw material, and then pushes the start button," explains Morissette. "A TC 2020 R with automation can run unassisted until the number of needed sheets is completed. This is a real benefit for companies that want to become more 'lean' or reduce operating costs to remain competitive."
