Balluff Introduces New Mini Block-Style Prox Sensor

Standard sensing range of 7 mm - or 5 mm in weld field immune version

FLORENCE, KY (September 2004) - Balluff is introducing the new RO1 mini block-style, low-profile inductive sensor that combines compact size with superior sensing range. Its narrow profile of just 20 x 32 x 8 mm makes it perfect for applications where conventional sensors can't fit. A rugged cast zinc housing makes the RO1 ideal for tough environments such as those found in stamping or welding applications.

Rated to IP67 level of protection, the new RO1 has a sensing range of 7 mm, which is superior to most other mini-sized block styles, according to the company. It is also available in a weld field-immune version with a 5 mm sensing range, designed to weather DC and AC magnetic fields. The weld-field immune version comes with an irradiated PVC cable for superior weld slag resistance.

RO1 weld field-immune (or magnetic field immune) proximity sensors are ideal for ensuring proper workpiece positioning in welding applications, where they can be installed near tongs. Strong magnetic fields generated by welding apparatus can play havoc with conventional sensors' internal coil oscillator systems, leading to false switching. Magnetic fields up to 100kA/m, which correspond to a welding current of 25kA at a distance of 40 mm, have no effect on the electronics.
