Promise Technology Enables Maximum Dependability for Storage with Double Parity Raid 6 Protection

New Architecture Delivers Outstanding Reliability for Servers and Storage Arrays

MILPITAS, Calif., Nov. 29 / -- Promise Technology, Inc., the originator and leading supplier of serial ATA (SATA) RAID data protection and storage solutions, today announced immediate availability of its RAID 6 double parity disk storage architecture for the highest level of reliability and data protection.

RAID 6 is the latest technology for shared storage systems and high-capacity SATA disk arrays used in many servers today. Because RAID 6 performs two different parity computations rather than one, it provides an extra layer of redundancy for increased fault handling and can tolerate two simultaneous drive failures or errors without downtime or data loss, while other fault-tolerant RAID levels only support a single failure for a given array.

"RAID 6 provides a major upgrade in protection for storage arrays, delivering improved protection at a reasonable cost," stated Mike Karp, senior analyst at Enterprise Management Associates. "The first major RAID level to gain market acceptance in years, RAID 6 may well become the RAID level of choice for read-intensive applications such as video-on-demand and other fixed content implementations. Promise Technology is a leader among those working to make RAID 6 an industry standard."

"As the first major vendor to deliver a line of RAID 6 controllers, Promise is giving its customers a distinct advantage by helping them to address the stringent data protection requirements of next-generation storage applications," said Suresh Panikar, vice president of worldwide channel sales and marketing for Promise Technology, Inc. "Our extensive experience in developing best-in-class, cost-effective SATA RAID storage solutions uniquely positions Promise to deliver real value for enterprises, large and small."

The first wave of products from Promise specifically designed to support RAID 6 includes its SuperTrak(TM) line of high-performance, 8-port SATA RAID controllers with hardware acceleration based on Intel(R) IOP331 and IOP333 I/O processors with Intel XScale(R) technology. These controllers are particularly well suited for high-capacity storage applications such as disk-to-disk backup, NAS and nearline storage, security/surveillance, and video editing.

"Designed specifically for RAID 6 applications, the highly integrated Intel IOP331 and IOP333 I/O processors with Intel XScale technology are helping companies, such as Promise Technology, deliver advanced data protection products for servers and the enterprise," said Mike Wall, general manager, Intel, Storage Group Marketing. "Intel shares Promise Technology's commitment to advancing storage reliability for IT users and integrators."
