Right On: New Generation of GE Program-Start Ballasts Offers Instant Benefits, Answer for New Laws

CLEVELAND - GE Consumer & Industrial takes cost-saving energy efficiency to new heights with the introduction of UltraStart(TM) T8 and UltraStart(TM) T5, a new line of program-start ballasts that enables companies to extend lamp life in frequently switched applications (five or more switches per day) and keep maintenance costs down, while using occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting to save energy and comply with strict new or emerging energy laws.

Designed for frequently switched applications, the UltraStart(TM) program-start ballasts incorporate instant-start ballast features and deliver instant-start ballast performance. UltraStart(TM) offers the same energy savings as high-efficiency (90 percent plus) T8 instant-start ballasts, and it is the only T8 program-start ballast available today to operate in parallel mode, a design attribute that keeps lamps working when other lamps fail. With series operation of lamps-a fact of life for program-start ballasts until now-all lamps on the ballast go out when a single lamp within the series fails.

The UltraStart(TM) T8 features a speedy and virtually undetectable 0.4 to 0.5 second start time, a rate that keeps pace with instant-start ballasts. It is up to three times faster than standard, program-start ballasts.

"We know customers and building users don't like the delay that occurs when occupancy sensors turn on fluorescent lamps run on standard program-start ballasts," says Jeff Plaskon, North America ballast product manager, GE Consumer & Industrial. "The UltraStart(TM) ballast series gives customers UltraMax(TM) instant-start ballast efficiency in a product designed for frequently switched applications where occupancy sensors are used."

Ideal for use in warehouse, commercial, industrial, retail and property management settings, UltraStart(TM) program-start ballasts do more than mirror instant-start ballasts. One noteworthy difference: Compared with instant-start ballasts, UltraStart(TM) ballasts can improve lamp life approximately 50 percent or more at 12 or more starts per day.

Newfound Versatility

UltraStart(TM) T8 ballasts-available with extra-low (XL 0.6), normal (N 0.88) or high (H 1.15) ballast factors-offer greater versatility than standard program-start ballasts, which are sold in just a single N 0.88 ballast factor. The exclusive "XL" UltraStart(TM) T8 is for facilities wanting to employ extremely low wattage systems in low-light areas. With the "XL" version, companies can keep just one lamp wattage in inventory, a potential cost savings. The "H" UltraStart(TM) T8 serves the fast-growing segment of fluorescent high-bay applications, specifically those with occupancy sensors.

"With UltraStart(TM) ballasts, facilities don't have to sacrifice lamp life or put up with high replacement costs just to comply with controls-per-square-foot laws or to implement corporate energy-saving strategies," says Plaskon. "We've combined the best of both ballast types to give customers more ways to stop wasteful spending on lighting energy and maintenance."
