Partners and Customers - Including Intel, HP, EMC and Amdocs - Support New Network-Enabling Technology Innovations Designed to Help Speed Delivery of Services to Customers

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 7 -- bea.com/more_info.jsp?p=277&r=20.21.22 BEA Systems (NASDAQ:BEAS), a world leader in infrastructure software, today announced a new set of products for the telecommunications industry. Formerly code-named Project Da Vinci, the BEA WebLogic Communications Platform(TM), is an integrated, standards-based suite of products and technologies being developed to help enable telecommunications companies to gain the ability to increase revenues by creating, delivering and managing converged voice, data, video and mobile services such as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), email, calendaring, peer-to-peer services, and a wide variety of digital content and video services over wireless and wireline networks. BEA today announced the general availability of the first of these products, the BEA WebLogic SIP Server(TM).

"The telecom industry is at a critical juncture in its evolution: With expanded competition and increased pressure for new services revenue, service providers are looking for ways to accelerate service innovation while minimizing delivery costs," said Rob Rich, executive vice president, the Yankee Group. "Emerging service delivery platforms provide operators with the software infrastructure to deliver a much broader and more compelling customer experience, while leveraging existing network assets and retaining the service quality subscribers have come to expect from the industry."

Alfred Chuang, chairman and chief executive officer of BEA Systems, commented: "The expected growth in telecommunications services using Internet technologies -- with new voice over IP, multi-media and wireless services plays quite well to BEA's core strengths of reliability, availability, scalability and performance. We are investing aggressively in the BEA WebLogic Communications Platform and our BEA WebLogic Service Delivery Solution as key components of our long-term strategy." Leveraging BEA's rich heritage and leadership in the telecom industry, the BEA WebLogic Communications Platform is a suite of products and technologies being developed to help telecommunications companies increase revenue and cut costs by reducing the cost and effort required to provide core telecommunications services.

The suite of products includes:

-- BEA WebLogic SIP Server(TM), the industry's first standards-based, carrier-grade, J2EE application server with integrated Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) support. SIP is a standard protocol for establishing a communication path between two or more entities for exchanging information in a variety of media (e.g., voice, images, video, etc.), and the BEA WebLogic SIP Server is a product designed for building and deploying services in a SIP environment. Built on the proven foundation of the industry-recognized BEA WebLogic Server(TM), BEA WebLogic SIP Server is designed to allow carriers to extend their network infrastructure with standards-based computing technologies which can provide such new, converged voice and data services as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), integrated fixed and wireless services, multi-player gaming with voice, real-time interactive voting and conferencing applications.

-- BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper(TM) is a product under development that is designed to allow carriers to define, manage and enforce access and quality of service (QoS) parameters for network resources. BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper can act as a single point to define and enforce policies for accessing key network capabilities, such as content charging, mobile terminal position information, SMS and MMS message delivery. BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper is a critical component of the BEA WebLogic Communications Platform because it can give telecom service providers greater visibility into and control over their network infrastructure while helping allow third party developers to build services that access those networks.

These and additional technologies in development are all aimed at helping carriers better serve their customers while increasing Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) through the rapid delivery of more sophisticated converged, mobile data services, such as email, calendaring, games, and a wide variety of digital content and video services.

Partners and Customers Support New BEA Telecom Technology Innovations

"Intel and BEA have worked extensively together to enable J2EE on standards-based servers using the Intel(R) Itanium(R) processor family, as well as 32-bit and 64-bit Intel(R) Xeon(TM) processors," said Dado Vrsalovic, Vice President & General Manager, Intel Service Providers Program Office. "Over the last two years, Intel and BEA have collaborated closely on the WebLogic Service Delivery solution -- with tremendous response from our mutual customers. Expanding service offerings and growing revenue in today's challenging environment requires an advanced and stable infrastructure. We are extremely pleased that these new products are designed to help empower service providers to speed the delivery of next generation services and strengthen Intel's and BEA's positions in the Service Provider marketplace."

Mark Hernandez, Senior Vice President and CIO for Time Warner Telecom, said: "Accenture and BEA have teamed together to develop a platform for service integration that enhances our ability to deliver customer self-service capabilities. As we evolve our service delivery platform, their support and new product initiatives, combined with our telecommunications expertise, will enable us to help our customers become more efficient as they manage an exciting new set of converged services."

Marco Limena, Vice President of Worldwide Solutions for HP's Network and Service Provider Business, said: "As strategic partners, our two companies have a strong track record of cooperating to deliver value for our customers. The BEA WebLogic Communications Platform product initiatives can help bring fresh innovation and expanded choice for HP customers who are leveraging the HP service delivery platform to streamline the creation and delivery of new services."

Rob Tarkoff, senior vice president of alliance, business development and strategy, EMC Software said, "As long-time partners within telecommunications and other industries, EMC and BEA have worked closely together on numerous telecom deployments. Today, as the demand for converged voice, video and data services increases, telecommunications companies are looking for proven platforms to help them rapidly organize and deliver services to their customers. The EMCDocumentum Mobile Content Delivery Solution (MCDS) coordinates the ingestion, management, transformation and delivery of content to wireless telephone users. Together with the BEA we have developed a platform to help speed, simplify and scale service delivery deployments."

Malcolm Dunn, vice president of Amdocs content business unit, said: "Our customers continue to benefit from the BEA WebLogic platform and we are pleased to see that BEA has increased its focus on service delivery technology for communications. Amdocs products and service capabilities, combined with the BEA platform, provide the system agility and alignment needed to rapidly launch competitive content and commerce services, facilitating the journey towards integrated customer management."
