RadiSys Extends Performance Limits of its IA-Based PrPMCs

The EPC-6320 and EPC-6321 are latest additions to RadiSys' popular family of building blocks for use in enterprise and service provider applications

NUREMBERG, GERMANY - February 17, 2004 - Today at Embedded World, RadiSys Corp. (Nasdaq: RSYS) announced the EPC-6320 and EPC-6321, the latest additions to its Intel® Architecture based Processor PMC (PrPMC) product line. Both products are based on the 933MHz Intel® Pentium® III processor and are available with 512MB or1GB of memory. Additionally, the EPC-6321 is available with dual gigabit Ethernet, via a Jn4 connector, making it PICMG 2.15 compatible.

The new RadiSys PrPMCs are ultra-dense CPUs offering OEMs high performance in a modular, upgradeable, standard PMC form factor. The processing power and memory combined in a small package make the EPC-6320 and EPC-6321 ideal for use in deeply embedded applications, like control plane processing in service provider equipment and processor offload in enterprise security systems.

Historically, single-board computers included the processor, supporting chipset and memory, and all I/O on a single board. This approach required a complete board redesign to accommodate any processor or I/O change. RadiSys shattered this model by delivering high performance, modular, upgradeable Intel Architecture (IA) PrPMCs that allow OEMs to configure their products according to price, performance and application needs. The ability to properly scale the processing power and memory requirements to the application, without a complete redesign, allows them to get a better product to market, faster and more economically.

Using modular CPU solutions is gaining popularity. VDC (Venture Development Corporation) describes these as "computers-on modules", or "COMs." According to VDC, "COMs are designed and marketed to be integral parts of carriers that require integrated on-board computing power." In a January 2003 report, VDC (Venture Development Corporation) estimated worldwide COM shipments to hit $160.9 million ($140.7 million *carrier boards only) in 2004. The research company estimates that number to reach $407.5 million ($364.4 million *carrier boards only) in 2006.

"We're building on the success of our previous PrPMC products with the addition of the EPC-6320 and 6321," said Fred Yentz, vice president for RadiSys. "Expanding our EPC family of products is proof of our commitment to support Intel technology and is evidence that we are providing customers with solutions that help them develop better products faster and more economically."

The EPC-6321 provides PICMG 2.15 compliance with dual gigabit Ethernet through a Jn4 connector. PICMG 2.15 compliance enables a standardized method of providing processor modularity within CompactPCI 2.16 and ATCA carrier boards. The EPC-6320 offers a legacy Jn4 pin-out to the EPC-6315 for legacy EPC-6315 users allowing them a seamless upgrade.

About the EPC-6320 and EPC-6321

The EPC-6320 and EPC-6321 are 74mm x 149mm, complying with the streamlined PrPMC standard form factor. Both feature the 933MHz Intel® Pentium® III processor, are available with 512MB or 1GB of memory and offer dual gigabit Ethernet support. To maximize overall system performance, the EPC-6320 and EPC-6321 incorporate the RadiSys 82600 chipset. This integrated chipset allows either to become a Monarch or Non-monarch PrPMC via the automatic configuration based on the strapping of the slot on the baseboard.

Both feature the PhoenixBIOS 4.0, release 6.0 with 4MB of Flash, PCI 2.1 compliance and IDE drive autoconfigure. Additionally, the EPC-6320 and EPC-6321 feature an integrated PCI IDE, Ethernet front panel connector (EPC6320 only), COM, keyboard, system monitoring and watchdog timer. They also offer safety and EMC compliance.

The EPC-6320 and EPC-6321 are compatible with today's popular embedded operating systems including Red Hat Linux* v7.3 and VxWorks*.

Pricing and Availability

The EPC-6320 and EPC-6321 are sampling today and production quantities will be available in April 2004. Both the EPC-6320 and EPC-6321 are priced from $1,948 (US) with 512MB of memory and $2,238 (US) with 1GB of memory. Pricing is determined based on configuration. OEM quantities and pricing will be available. Please contact RadiSys at 800-950-0044 for more information.
