"Future Proof" GYRO(TM) Probe Heads Bring Faster Inspections and Performance Upgrade Path to Wide Range of Coordinate Measuring Machines

Versatile head offers three levels of functionality - touch-trigger, 3-axis scanning and 5-axis scanning - with easy upgrading as needs change

September 2006 - Renishaw continues its revolution in speeding inspections on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) with the development of a second dynamic measuring head based on design innovations introduced in the REVO(TM) head for ultra-high-speed, 5-axis scanning. Available early 2007 in North America, the two-axis GYRO(TM) head is a uniquely versatile measuring device available in three levels of functionality - touch trigger, 3-axis scanning and 5-axis scanning. "Future proof" design allows easy upgrade to higher functionality as user needs change.

GYRO is an infinitely positioning dynamic measuring head designed for greatest accessibility to part features and alignment at optimum angle for accurate measurement. Rapid orientation of the stylus results in significantly lower inspection cycle times, maximizing throughput.

Touch-trigger GYRO - This touch trigger-only model greatly enhances the way that single measurement points are taken. It optimizes feature access, while dynamic positioning in many cases allows features to be measured using only the motion of the head. In touch-trigger mode, GYRO can take measurements at up to 500 mm reach. Through a simple software upgrade, a GYRO head with touch-trigger functionality can be transformed to 3-axis or ultimately 5-axis scanning.

GYRO with Renscan3(TM) - This model incorporates scanning functionality to achieve rapid measurement. However, it is reliant on CMM motion, as the head remains stationary. Traditionally, CMM motion scanning applications are restricted to around 10 mm/sec. to avoid dynamic errors in maintaining accuracy. By using the benefits of Renishaw's RenscanDC(TM) dynamic compensation technology, GYRO with Renscan3 allows 3-axis scanning at up to 150 mm/sec.

GYRO with Renscan5(TM) - Renscan5 gives full 5-axis scanning functionality, enabling three CMM axes and two GYRO head axes to move synchronously. The compact GYRO head is far lower in mass and more dynamic than the coordinate measuring machine, with significantly better frequency response. This allows it to perform most of the positioning movement and quickly follow changes in part geometry without introducing harmful dynamic errors from the CMM. In most cases, the CMM is simply required to move along a vector at constant velocity. GYRO can perform full 5-axis scanning at speeds up to 500 mm/sec.

The GYRO's adaptability makes it suitable for both small and large DCC CMMs, improving inspection throughput while providing a pathway for future improvements.

The GYRO heads allow the use of laser-tip sense technology introduced on the REVO head. A laser light system is used to accurately measure the exact position of the probe tip, with a laser beam directed down a hollow stylus to a reflector at the stylus tip. Unlike conventional styli that need to be very stiff, the new hollow stylus is designed to bend, thereby deflecting the return path of the laser beam which is received by a Position Sensing Detector (PSD) mounted in the probe body, enabling calculation of exact stylus tip position. Measurement accuracy is maintained even with very long styli (500 mm reach is available).

GYRO heads accept an extensive range of M2-style holder lengths and are compatible with Renishaw's popular Modular Rack Systems (MRS). This allows fast, repeatable stylus changes, without the need for re-qualification of the stylus tip.

Renscan5 and GYRO are available with the new UCC2 universal CMM controller that forms the foundation for Renishaw's future high-speed scanning systems. The second generation UCC2 controller features patented MoveScan(TM) software that synchronizes and smoothes motion between the CMM and the GYRO head. On-the-fly repositioning of head and stylus between part features shortens scanning time of indexing systems.
