Intermec Printer Application Server Turns Printers Into Interactive Network Terminals

Users can interact with host system database via the printer directly, eliminating need for PCs and terminals on each printer

EVERETT, Wash., November 9, 2001 - Intermec Technologies Corp.'s
Printer Application Server(TM) , the newest member of the EasyLAN 100I family of printing products, eliminates the need to associate a PC directly with the printer. With IPAS, the printer itself becomes an interactive device, a client on the network that prompts the host system for the information it needs. The resulting PC-free printing saves on cost and space and creates a more efficient and easy to use printing solution.

IPAS provides support for ODBC connectivity, which enables printers to access corporate databases over the company's network, interacting with and retrieving data from the host computer based on varying criteria. For example, it can retrieve part numbers entered by the operator on the front panel keyboard and display.

"Intermec's Printer Application Server is the latest innovation to make printing faster, easier and - because you don't need a PC - less expensive," said Mike Wills, vice president of Intermec's printer/media business units. "Intermec's printing products provide the most advanced capabilities ever offered to manage printing."

Message server software, which is included with the IPAS, allows the printer to send alert messages via the network. Using it, pre-emptive failure notification alerts can be sent using a variety of communications methods - such as pagers, mobile phones and personal data assistants - even when the printer is printing. Since most failures occur during printing, this unique multi-channel capability avoids unnecessary delays and ensures production efficiency.

EasyLAN(TM) Printing EasyLAN printing products provide both flexible printer management and the ability to print across the Internet to any location at any time. The combined capabilities of EasyLAN 100i's network interface card plus the ability to customize printer functionality via Intermec's Fingerprint(TM) BASIC programming, allow customers to optimize the performance of their networked printers - all while simplifying maintenance.

Unlike products that piggyback a print server to the parallel port of the printer, EasyLAN lOOi provides a direct connection to the printer's processor board. This dramatically increases the throughput of Intermec's networked printers by as much as 50 percent.
