New Pressure Sensor Material Available



Impress is a new, inexpensive, and integrable pressure sensor available from Cogent Enterprises, Inc. of Sterling Heights, Michigan. Impress is rugged, inexpensive, and demonstrates measurable reactions to small changes in pressure which can be measured and used as a pressure sensor.

Impress is available as a wire or as a shape suitable to custom applications. The resistivity of Impress is inversely proportional to the length of the cable or material used. Impress can be used for a wide variety of electronic or electrical applications where systems relatively respond to small changes in pressure.

Most electrical analog sensors concentrate on high accuracy, and therefore are expensive. In addition, many electrical analog pressure sensors are physically sensitive devices that must be protected and in many cases be treated very carefully. This has profound implications for improving product performance in demanding environments such as automotive engines, appliances and power tools.

As a double conductor wire, it is easily incorporated into an application at low cost. The thickness is variable, as are the pressure resistance properties. The overall diameter is less than the thickness of a dime. The coaxial cable pressure sensor has other unique properties. It is one of the only pressure sensors that has a built-in integrity check.

By applying sensing currents to the inner and outer conductors, it is possible to tell if the sensor is intact or if it is damaged. This feature alone makes this pressure sensor ideal for safety related systems. Different compositions of material can be engineered having different properties with respect to strand length (or material volume), temperature, and pressure.
