Presens Creates a Technology Shift in Pressure Measurement

Oslo, Norway - December 13, 2007

The Norwegian pressure sensor company, Presens AS, announces the launch of their new PRECISE pressure sensor. Utilizing advanced digital MEMS technology, the PRECISE sensor is ideal for applications such as calibrators and digital gauges that require high accuracy, low drift and high resolution.

The PRECISE sensor measures high pressures with extreme accuracy and no significant drift. With a guaranteed total error band (all possible errors) of <±0.01%FS, high resolution and an inherent tolerance to over-pressure and pressure spikes, the PRECISE sensor offers a level of performance unequalled by any other pressure sensor.

The road to success
Since their first commercial installation in 1998, Presens has worked towards achieving their goal of developing the world's best pressure sensor. Through years of continuous development and refinement of their unique core pressure sensor technology, Presens has created a sensor with characteristics that enable countless new possibilities in pressure measurement. "The challenge has been to combine mathematics, mechanics and electronics in a way that optimizes the attributes of the technology", states Presens' Chief Technical Officer, Bjorn Erik Seeberg.

Seeberg continues, "Throughout the development process, our goal has been to achieve a total error band of <±0.01%FS. To be on the safe side, we worked with several different solutions, therefore development has taken longer than we originally planned. Now that the PRECISE sensor is launched, we are absolutely certain that the product delivers as promised."

Petter Eide, Product Manager of PRECISE, agrees,"PRECISE has been tested by several independent institutions, and they all agree that it is accurate to within ±0.01%FS. Combined with its tolerance to noise, vibration, over-pressure and pressure spikes, we are certain that we have developed a unique product that fills a large void in the market."

He adds,"Although we have completed development of PRECISE, we will not rest on our laurels. The knowledge and experience gained in developing PRECISE will be used to generate new development. For example, we now know that ±0.005%FS is within reach. If we can additionally increase both the pressure area and speed of the sensor, we will be entering exciting, unchartered territory."

Unique Patented Technology
At the heart of the PRECISE sensor is the company's proprietary patented technology. In comparison to conventional silicon pressure sensors that use diaphragms with a piezoresistive resistor bridge to measure stress, Presens pressure sensors measure pressure-induced compressive stress with a piezoresistive Wheatstone bridge integrated in a tubular silicon structure.

The mechanical design of the sensing element makes it possible to develop extremely robust and sensitive sensor solutions, which is the key to operational benefits for the user:

o Silicon (Si) single crystal structure minimizes errors due to thermal and mechanical hysteresis and prevents long-term drift due to "creep"
o The tubular design enables mechanical de-coupling of sensing area and eliminates error due to mounting stress
o Extreme tolerance to over-pressure and pressure spikes is achieved in compressive stress operations
o The piezoresistive Wheatstone resistor bridge is extremely stable and measures pressure and temperature simultaneously on the same resistor bridge

The PRECISE features
o FS pressure range up to 0 - 2000 bar
o Total accuracy <± 0.01% FS
o 1-year drift <± 0.01% FS
o Over-pressure 1.5 x FS to 5 x FS (FS pressure dependent)
o Adjustable sample rate 5 to 25 samples/sec
o Resolution in electronics <1 ppm ( 20 bit)
o Shock & vibration resistant
o Robust, all-welded construction

About Presens AS
Presens was founded in 1996 to commercialize a patented pressure sensor technology developed by the Sintef Group, one of Europe's largest independent research organizations and among the world's leading research institutes in silicon micromachining technology. The company's unique and versatile technology enables extremely accurate pressure measurement under demanding conditions.

Presens secured its first commercial installation in 1998 and has since further developed its technology with a range of products designed for a number of challenging applications. Today, Presens supplies high-accuracy sensors worldwide to the oil & gas, aerospace, and industrial markets.
